Seven in the morning, minus eighteen on site, and the coffee from the gas station is already going cold on the dash. Most Christmas gift lists for construction workers are written for someone shopping for one person. If you run the crew, you're buying for twelve, and you want the gift still in the truck in March.
Here's what crews keep, what they leave in the trailer, what the CRA taxes, and when to order.
The short answer. Give each person one thing they'll use on site every day, with their own name on it. Our pick is a 34 oz insulated tumbler rated to keep coffee hot for 12 hours. Add a ham if the budget allows. A cash bonus is pay, not a gift, and it's taxed. Order 25 or more by Friday, November 20.

What the crews themselves suggest
Search "christmas gifts for construction workers" on Google in Canada and the first result is an r/Construction thread titled "Christmas gift ideas for employees." Google's preview of the answers reads: "Turkeys or hams. Yeti cups/thermos, nice lunch bags, Bluetooth speakers, coolers, backpacks, etc. Insulated water bottles."
That's a better list than several of the gift guides under it, which suggest hard hats, safety glasses and steel-toe boots. Your crew already has those. You bought them. A Christmas gift that is also required gear reads as an expense, not a thank-you.
Christmas gifts for construction workers, ranked
This is ranked for an employer buying for a whole crew. Shopping for one tradesperson you know well? A good tool they've been eyeing beats everything here.
| Gift | Still on site in March? | Tax (CRA) | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Insulated tumbler with their name | Yes. It rides in the truck every day. | Non-cash gift, counts toward the $500 | Steel dents if it falls off a tailgate. Hand-wash. |
| 2. Winter work gear (gloves, a good hoodie) | Until it wears through | Non-cash gift | Sizes. Twelve sizes means twelve questions. |
| 3. A ham or turkey | No. Gone by New Year's. | Non-cash gift | Nothing. It feeds the family. Best as an add-on. |
| 4. Cooler, speaker or lunch bag | Often goes home | Non-cash gift | Fine, just not personal |
| 5. Tools | If it's the right brand | Non-cash gift | Everyone has a battery platform. Buy the wrong one and it sits in the box. |
| 6. Gift card | Spent and forgotten | Usually near-cash, so taxable | Only non-cash if it meets CRA's conditions |
| 7. Cash bonus | It's on the T4 | Always taxable | Pay it if you planned to. It isn't a gift. |
Cash ranks last on this list only because it's a different decision. If your crew earned a bonus, pay it. Then give them something with their name on it.
Why a hot-drink tumbler wins on a winter site
The CCOHS guidance on working in the cold (the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety) says: "For warming purposes, warm non-alcoholic beverages or soup are suggested." It also says to limit caffeinated drinks, because they add to dehydration. So the tumbler should hold tea or soup as well as it holds coffee.
That's why we'd pick the Grouse 34 oz for a crew. Our product page rates it at 12 hours hot and 24 hours cold. It has a carry handle you can grab one-handed and a flip-top lid. At 34 oz, it's about a litre.
Those hours are our own rating, under our own conditions. A tumbler that sits in a minus-twenty truck cab will lose heat faster. Fill it with boiling water for five minutes before the coffee goes in, and it holds longer.
For summer crews, the Cascade 40 oz is the big water tumbler (rated 6 hours hot, 24 cold). For a site office, the Grouse 20 oz has a leakproof one-hand flip lid (rated 6 hours hot, 12 cold).

Their name, not your logo
Twelve identical tumblers in a site trailer means twelve "whose is this?" by Friday. A name ends that on day one. It also changes who the gift is for. A tumbler with the company logo is equipment. A tumbler with "Dave" on it goes home with Dave, and he keeps it.
We engrave the name with a laser, through the powder coat into the steel. It doesn't peel off or wash off. Want the company logo too? Ask for it on the quote, and keep it small.
A customer whose father works construction wrote this on Etsy in December 2024: "Quickly became my father's favorite travel cup, he travels for construction work constantly and this cup and the engraving have held up beautifully."

Are Christmas gifts for a crew taxable?
Not if you set them up right. The CRA's gifts and awards page treats a gift "for a special occasion such as a religious holiday" as non-taxable when it is non-cash and your gifts to that employee total "$500 or less (including taxes)" for the year. Three things follow for a crew:
- Engraving counts. The CRA says to include items "whose FMV may have been altered by a logo or engraving." A $25 to $45 tumbler is far under $500.
- Cash and most gift cards are taxable. The CRA calls them cash or near-cash. A gift card only counts as non-cash if it meets the conditions on that page.
- Word the card for the holiday. The CRA calls a gift for performance reasons a reward, and a reward is a taxable benefit. "Merry Christmas, thanks for the year" is a gift. "For bringing the job in on schedule" reads like a reward.
Subcontractors aren't your employees, so this $500 rule doesn't apply to them. For the full tax picture, see our post on the CRA gift rules. For office staff, see Christmas gifts for employees.
Running a fleet too? Drivers need a different test, because the gift lives in a cupholder. We wrote it up in Christmas gifts for truck drivers from the company.
Crew on a rig or in a camp? Dry camps and 12-hour shifts change the list. See Christmas gifts for oilfield workers.
When to order
Our holiday page sets two dates for 2026:
- 25 or more pieces: order by Friday, November 20. You approve an artwork proof, then the run takes 5 to 10 business days on the laser, plus shipping.
- Personalized gifts: order by Friday, December 11. Proof within 24 hours, then 1 to 3 business days of engraving in our Calgary studio, plus shipping.
For a crew of 10 to 24, we'd still order in November. December carriers are slow, and a misspelled name needs time for a redo.
The long step is your name list, not our laser. Get the spellings from the foreman, not from payroll. Hand them out at the last toolbox talk before the break, when the whole crew is there.

When not to buy this
- They got tumblers last year. Give the ham and the hoodie this year.
- You have two people. Take them for lunch, and ask what they want.
- You only want your logo on it. Then it's a promo item. Our post on corporate gifts people keep covers that.
FAQ
What do you give construction workers for Christmas?
Something they'll use on site that they wouldn't buy for themselves: an insulated tumbler with their name on it, good winter gloves, or a hoodie in the right size. A ham or turkey is a good add-on. Skip safety gear they already get from you.
What are good Christmas gift ideas for work employees?
One useful thing with the person's name on it beats a box of branded items. Keep it non-cash and under $500 for the year, and word the card for the holiday, not for performance, so the CRA treats it as a non-taxable gift.
What is the 5 gift rule?
It's a family budgeting rule: one thing they want, one they need, one to wear, one to read, and one to do or share. For a crew gift, pick from "need": something they'll use every shift.
Are Christmas gifts to employees taxable in Canada?
Non-cash gifts for a religious holiday are not taxable if an employee's gifts total $500 or less for the year, including taxes. Cash and most gift cards are taxable. Engraved items count at fair market value.
When should I order engraved Christmas gifts for a crew?
For 25 or more, order by Friday, November 20, 2026. For smaller personalized orders, by Friday, December 11. Have the name list checked before you order, because that takes longer than the engraving.
