"Got a bottle of red wine with my recent NX purchase... too bad I don't drink." That's a Lexus owner on the ClubLexus forum, in a thread where buyers compare what their dealer handed them with the keys. Further down, a Porsche owner on Rennlist got rubber floor mats and sold them "for a round of drinks."

The gift that did its job in that Lexus thread cost the least. It was a stuffed toy badger, and its owner wrote: "I've since taken it to the dealer for every service over 7 years." Here's how to give a handover gift that stays in the car, what it costs per buyer, and when to order it.

The short answer. The best dealership gift for a customer is one thing that lives in the vehicle they just bought, with their name on it. Our pick is an insulated tumbler that fits the cup holder, engraved with the buyer's name and delivery date. Skip the logo keychain and the bottle of wine. Budget $22 to $40 a buyer.

What buyers say dealers actually gave them

Search "car dealership gifts for customers" in Canada and page one is promo catalogues, Etsy, Pinterest, an Australian gift-box company and car forums. The forums are the useful part, because that's where buyers say what they kept. From the ClubLexus thread "Dealer gifts?":

  • "I used to get coffee mugs, but this time, nothing. (well, a keychain)"
  • "In the past: wine, chocolate etc. This time: imported fruits, delicate snacks -- I wasn't interested and gave all to my friends."
  • "I got 2 travel mugs and a Lexus golf towel when my RC-F arrived. I was not impressed."

And from Rennlist's "Dealer gifts as a thank you": "I got a pen and a granola bar." Another owner there put the cynical view plainly: "Lots of swag means lots of margin... I can buy my own key-ring."

Two patterns show up. Branded swag reads as cheap next to the price of a car. Food and wine miss anyone who doesn't drink or isn't hungry that afternoon. The toy badger worked for a different reason. It was odd enough to be personal, and it kept bringing the owner back to the service bay.

Car dealership gifts for customers, ranked

This is ranked for a dealership buying for every delivery, not one salesperson thanking one buyer. "Still in the car" is our judgment, based on the forum posts above and our own product reviews.

Gift Typical cost each Still in the car at month six? Watch out for
1. Cup-holder tumbler, buyer's name + delivery date $22 at 10+, $40 for one Yes, it rides in the console Needs the name a few days before pickup
2. Winter kit (scraper, blanket, travel mug) Varies by supplier The scraper is; the rest drifts They may already own a scraper
3. Car-care kit from US$15.31, 50 minimum In the garage, maybe Hard to make personal
4. Chocolate or a treat box Varies No, eaten (which is fine) Our view: better at a service visit
5. Bottle of wine Varies No "Too bad I don't drink"
6. Logo keychain, air freshener, plate frame US$0.84 to $1.20, 250 minimum Rarely "I can buy my own key-ring"

Promo prices are Crestline's listed "from" prices for key tags, air fresheners and its auto kit, in US dollars. The winter-kit idea is from Delivering Joy, a Canadian gift-box company. Our prices are from our product page, engraving included.

Food deserves a fair word. Mueller's Chocolate, a US chocolatier, writes that "the delivery moment matters because it is already emotional," and its own system saves the good box for "new purchase deliveries, referrals, or VIP clients." That's right about the moment. We'd still give something that outlasts it.

Why the cup holder is the right place

A handover gift has one job: be in the vehicle they just bought. The cup holder is the one spot in a new car that's empty on day one.

That's why we'd pick the Peyto 16 oz. Our product page lists it at 3.4 inches wide by 6.3 tall, sized for standard car cup holders, and rates it 6 hours hot and 24 hours cold. It has a splash-proof sliding lid, which matters more in a moving car than at a desk.

The width is not a detail. A 2024 Etsy review of one of our wider travel mugs reads: "it is too wide to fit in any kind of cup holder. Kind of defeats having a coffee cup to go." Another buyer wrote about one of our slim 16 oz tumblers: "My husband loves that it fits in his cup holders in his car and the customized name on it is lasered on instead of it being a sticker!" Measure your gift against your own cup holders before you buy a hundred.

For a step up, the Emerald 16 oz has a tapered base for cup holders and the same 6-hour, 24-hour rating, in 316 stainless steel.

Their name and the date, not your logo

A tumbler with the dealership logo is advertising. One that says "Priya · Picked up Oct 17, 2026" is a keepsake of the day they bought the car, and the dealership is part of that memory without being printed on it.

If you want the store on it, keep it small: a short line under the date, or "from the team at" with your name. The buyer should read their own name first.

We engrave with a laser, through the powder coat into the steel. It doesn't peel or wash off.

What it costs per delivery

About 1,958,582 new vehicles were sold in Canada in 2025, and 233,619 in Alberta. That's our sum of Statistics Canada's monthly counts (Table 20-10-0085-01). It works out to roughly 5,400 handovers a day across the country. At that scale, a gift is a line in the per-unit budget, so price it that way.

Order size (mix any tumblers) Peyto 16 oz each Discount
1 $40 none
2 $32 20%
3 $28 30%
5 $24 40%
10+ $22 45%

Engraving is included at every size, and each piece can carry a different name. A store that delivers ten or more vehicles a week can send one order a week and pay $22 a buyer. That's about the price of a decent bottle of wine, and the name makes it impossible to regift.

Timing: get the name before pickup day

Engraving needs the buyer's name, so the gift can't be pulled from a shelf on delivery day. Our timeline: a proof by email within 24 hours, then 1 to 3 business days on the laser in Calgary, then shipping. For an order placed today, October 3, our product page estimates delivery by October 14, so plan on up to two weeks.

In practice, that means ordering when the deal is signed, not when the car is detailed. If a buyer drives off the same day, give the tumbler at their first service visit instead. That's a second reason for them to come back, and a better one than an oil-change coupon.

Ordering for a full lot, or more than 25 a month? Send us your numbers for a quote and we'll price it with you.

Tax, briefly

If you're a commissioned salesperson buying gifts yourself, the CRA's guide T4044 says: "You can deduct expenses for advertising and promotion, including amounts you paid for business cards, promotional gifts, and advertisements." Conditions apply, so check with your accountant.

For the dealership, section 67.1 of the Income Tax Act limits the deduction for "human consumption of food or beverages" to 50 percent. Whether a boxed bottle of wine counts is your accountant's call. A steel tumbler is not food.

FAQ

What are some good gift ideas for car dealership customers?

One useful thing that stays in the vehicle, with the buyer's name on it. A tumbler sized for the cup holder, engraved with their name and delivery date, is our pick. Logo keychains and air fresheners are the gifts buyers on car forums say they toss.

What are good gifts for someone who just got a new car?

Something they'll use in that car every day: an insulated tumbler that fits the cup holder, a good ice scraper in a Canadian winter, or a detailing voucher. Put their name on it if you can, so it reads as a gift and not a promo item.

Do car dealerships give gifts when you buy a car?

Many do, but it varies by store and brand. Owners on Lexus and Porsche forums report keychains, travel mugs, wine, chocolate, floor mats, a pen and a granola bar, and sometimes nothing at all.

How do I thank my car salesperson?

Leave a review that names them, and send friends their way. If you want to give a gift, coffee or food for the team is easy to share.

How much should a dealership spend on a customer gift?

Spend enough that it's useful and personal. Name-engraved tumblers run $22 each at 10 or more and $40 for one, engraving included. That's about the price of a decent bottle of wine, and buyers can tell it apart from a $1 keychain.

Chen Deng founded LAMOSE in 2017. Our steel tumblers are made by a supplier overseas and engraved in Calgary. Owner quotes are from public ClubLexus (2017) and Rennlist (2019) threads. Vehicle counts are our sum of Statistics Canada Table 20-10-0085-01. Competitor prices are from Crestline's site, and the CRA and tax quotes are from guide T4044 and the Income Tax Act. Our prices, sizes and ratings come from our product pages, and customer quotes from our Etsy reviews. Everything was checked October 3, 2026.
