Hanukkah 2026 starts at sundown on Friday, December 4. That's three weeks before Christmas, and every holiday shipping calendar in Canada is counting down to December 25. Order a Hanukkah gift on a Christmas schedule and it arrives after the candles are out.
Here's what to give, how to time it, and the two things that trip people up when the person you're giving to keeps kosher.
The short answer. For kids, keep the eight nights: gelt and small gifts. For adults, give one thing they'll keep, with their name on it, on one night, and give another night to a cause they care about. Hanukkah 2026 runs from sundown Friday, December 4 to Saturday, December 12. Order engraved gifts by Friday, November 20.

Hanukkah 2026 dates, and the Friday problem
According to Hebcal, Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. The eighth candle is lit on Friday, December 11.
Both the first and the last night fall on a Friday. On Friday afternoon, the Hanukkah candles are lit before the Shabbat candles, as Chabad explains. If you're invited for the first night, arrive before sundown, gift in hand.
For shipping, that means your gift needs to land by Thursday, December 3. Canada Post hadn't published its 2026 holiday dates when we checked on October 1, and its usual dates are keyed to Christmas anyway.
Hanukkah gift ideas, ranked
About 335,000 people in Canada reported being Jewish in the 2021 Census, according to Statistics Canada. Nearly half live in the Toronto area. Families give in very different ways, so this ranking is about who the gift is for, not one right answer.
| Gift | Best for | Still around in March? | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. One engraved piece they keep | Grandparents, partners, teachers, clients | Yes, used every day | Order by Nov 20. A steel cup may need tevilah (below), so give it empty. |
| 2. A donation in their name | Anyone. ReformJudaism.org gives one of the eight nights to justice. | Yes, in a different way | Ask which cause. Don't pick it for them. |
| 3. Gelt | Kids, and every table | No, it gets eaten (or spent) | Chocolate gelt for a kosher home needs a kosher symbol |
| 4. A small gift each night | Kids | Some of it | Eight things to find room for by January |
| 5. A night out or an activity together | Families, couples | As a memory | Friday nights are Shabbat. Check before you book. |
| 6. A food basket | Hosts, offices | No | If they keep kosher, every item needs certification, and you may not know which symbols they trust |
We put the engraved piece first for adults, and we sell them, so weigh that. The reason is simple. Gelt is the old custom. Gifts that last past the eighth night are the ones that get used, and a cup with their name on it gets used every morning. The food basket comes last because it's the easiest to get wrong for a kosher home and it's gone by the weekend.
One gift on one night, not eight small ones
Big Hanukkah gift-giving is newer than many people assume. Historian Jonathan Sarna told My Jewish Learning: "Hanukkah gelt is an old custom, well attested in Europe. Gift giving, by contrast, is new." In the same article, historian Dianne Ashton dates the boom in Hanukkah gifts to the 1950s.
That's useful if you're shopping for an adult. Nobody needs eight things. Hallmark Canada suggests a theme for each night: a family activity, a book, something handmade, an act of kindness. ReformJudaism.org's gift guide pairs each night with a value, and says it plainly: "While Hanukkah isn't about gifts, it is an opportunity to show our loved ones that we care about them."
So pick the night for the gift. The rest can be latkes, a game of dreidel and a donation.
For a grandparent far away, the gift note does most of the work. One customer's note on an order from December 2020, the year many families couldn't visit, read: "Happy Hanukkah Grandma/Mom! We miss you!"
What to engrave
- Their name. The simplest gift on this list and the one that gets kept.
- The year and a word. "Hanukkah 2026" with a family name works as a gift from the whole family.
- A line that means something to them. A blessing, a family saying, the name of their shul.
- A Hebrew name. Send the exact Hebrew text as a file through our quote page rather than typing it, so the letters and their direction come through as written. Then check the proof letter by letter before you approve it.

If they keep kosher: two things to know
A new steel cup may need tevilah
If they keep kosher, they may immerse new steel and glass dishes in a mikvah before using them. This is called tevilat kelim. The Orthodox Union's primer says a utensil needs it "if it was manufactured by, purchased from, given as a gift by, or bought back from a non-Jew." Star-K's guidelines say cups and thermoses made of glass or of steel and similar materials need tevilah with a blessing.
What this means for you: give the cup empty and clean, in its box. Don't fill it with hot chocolate or candy first. They'll know what to do.
Food is harder than it looks
If they keep kosher, food gifts need certification, and not every symbol on a label means the same thing. As Aish puts it, a product labelled with a plain "K" does "not necessarily" mean it's kosher. In Canada the best-known certifiers are COR in Toronto and MK in Montreal. When in doubt, choose something that isn't food.
An engraved cup, in time for the first candle
The Emerald 16 oz is $40 with the engraving included: 316 stainless, 6 hours hot, 24 hours cold. For a grandparent who wants a handle, the Hudson 12 oz mug is $36. Two or more save 20%, and orders of 3 or more ship in a gift box.

Our published Christmas dates are 14 days before December 25 for a personalized gift and 35 days before for runs of 25 or more. Move them three weeks earlier for Hanukkah:
| What you're ordering | For the first night (Fri Dec 4) | For Christmas |
|---|---|---|
| A personalized gift (1 to 24 pieces) | Fri Nov 20 | Fri Dec 11 |
| Client or staff gifts, 25 or more | Fri Oct 30 | Fri Nov 20 |
The Hanukkah column is our arithmetic, not a separate promise. If you're close to a date, text us at (825) 468-2499 before you order. A real person replies, usually the same business day. A gift for the eighth night (Friday, December 11) buys you one more week.
Hanukkah gifts for clients and staff
A gift that arrives before December 4 with a Hanukkah card says you noticed. A Christmas gift with "Happy Holidays" on the card says you didn't. Neither costs more.
- Send it to arrive before the first night. That means ordering 25 or more by October 30.
- Put their name on it, not your logo. A client keeps a cup with their name on it. A logo cup goes to the office kitchen.
- Skip food unless you know their kosher practice. See above.
- Mind the CRA limit. The CRA treats a gift for a religious holiday as a gift for a special occasion. Non-cash gifts to an employee are tax-free up to $500 a year, so a Hanukkah gift and a Christmas gift to the same person share that $500. Our employee gift guide covers the rules.
Office gift exchanges are often mixed, and the gift notes show it. One customer's 2020 note said only: "Happy Christmas/Hanukkah from your Secret Santa!"
For a list of names, send it to us. We'll come back within one business day with the pieces, the total and a delivery date, shipped to one address or to each person with your note. Get a quote.
Questions people ask
What is a typical Hanukkah gift?
Traditionally, gelt: coins, or today often chocolate coins, given to children. Larger gifts are a newer custom that grew in North America in the 20th century. Today families do anything from a small gift each night to one bigger gift, and many give one night to a donation or an act of kindness.
Are you supposed to give gifts on Hanukkah?
There's no religious requirement to give presents. Gelt is the old custom, and historians date the wider gift-giving to the late 1800s and especially the 1950s. If someone you know celebrates, a thoughtful gift or a card on time is welcome, but nobody expects eight gifts from a friend or colleague.
What not to bring to a Hanukkah party?
If your hosts keep kosher, don't bring homemade food or anything without a kosher certification they accept. Don't bring Christmas-themed gifts or wrapping. If the party is on a Friday, arrive before sundown, because the Hanukkah candles are lit before Shabbat begins. A non-food gift is the safe choice.
What are good Hanukkah gift ideas for 2026?
For adults: one engraved piece they'll use every day, like a tumbler or mug with their name, plus a donation to a cause they choose. For kids: gelt and a small gift each night, or a theme for each night. For clients: a gift that arrives before Friday, December 4, with a Hanukkah card.
When does Hanukkah start in 2026?
At sundown on Friday, December 4, 2026. It ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12, and the eighth candle is lit on Friday, December 11. To have an engraved gift arrive in time for the first night, order by Friday, November 20.
One gift they'll still use in March
Order a personalized gift by November 20 to have it before the first night. Gifting 25 or more clients or staff? Order by October 30.
