Ask oilfield hands what they want for Christmas and the top answers are cash and liquor. You can't give either one cleanly. Cash is taxable to the employee, and a lot of camps are dry.
The short answer. For a rig or camp crew, give something that lasts a 12-hour shift and survives the crew truck: an insulated bottle rated 12 hours hot, with a leak-proof cap and each hand's last name and rig number engraved. Skip liquor (many camps are dry) and cash (taxable). Order 25+ by November 20.

Who this is for
This is for the person buying for a crew: the rig manager, the superintendent, the office manager at a service company who got handed the Christmas list. Most "oilfield gift" pages are written for a spouse and sell pump jack models and joke mugs. Your problem is different. You need 15 or 40 of something, it has to work in the field, and it shouldn't create a tax headache.
It's a big crowd to buy for. Statistics Canada counts 140,200 Albertans working in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction in 2025 (Table 14-10-0023-01).
What the hands actually say
A supervisor asked r/oilandgasworkers in December 2024 what to get "the fellas on the crew for Christmas" at $100 to $150 each. The top reply: "RTIC Backpack Coolers. - Cash - Liquor". Another suggested custom hoodies: "Put last names on one shoulder." A 2019 thread asking hands what they'd want had "Job stability. In lieu of that, alcohol." at the top, and further down, "A really good travel mug/thermos."
Read those together and the pattern is clear. They want something useful on shift, something with their own name on it, and to know the boss noticed. Two of those you can engrave.
Why cash and liquor don't work
Liquor. Suncor's lodge rules are blunt: "The accommodation is alcohol-free." No alcohol in rooms, vehicles or common areas. Suncor banned alcohol at all its Alberta worker camps back in 2009, and AKITA Drilling calls its drug and alcohol policies "both strict and strictly enforced." A bottle of rye handed out at the shop is a bottle that can't go back to camp.
Cash and gift cards. The CRA treats cash and near-cash gifts to employees as a taxable benefit, every time. Non-cash gifts are tax-free up to $500 a year per employee. That's the CRA's employee policy. If your crew includes contractors or their employees, it doesn't cover them, so check with your accountant. Our CRA gift rules explainer has the details.
Room gadgets. The same Suncor rules ban coffee makers, hot plates and toasters in lodge rooms, and candles too. A single-serve brewer is a nice gift for home and a confiscated one at camp.
The 12-hour test
Drilling rigs run around the clock. AKITA Drilling describes "a three-crew rotation with each crew working a 12 hour shift," and Precision Drilling advertises "12-hour shifts" on rotations like 14 days on, 7 off. The coffee gets poured at the camp kitchen before the crew truck leaves, and it has to last.
So the test is simple. Is it still hot at the end of the shift? Does it leak lying on its side in a lunch bag? Will it come back to the right guy? Canada's workplace safety centre (CCOHS) says that for cold work, "warm non-alcoholic beverages or soup are suggested." A bottle that holds heat all shift is useful on a January lease, not just thoughtful.
Oilfield crew gifts, ranked
| Gift | Works at camp? | Tax (employees) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-hour bottle, name + rig # engraved | Yes, every shift | Non-cash, under $500 | Our pick |
| Hoodie with last name | Yes | Non-cash | Good. Get sizes right. |
| Backpack cooler | Yes | Non-cash | Good at $100+ a head |
| Crew dinner on the next hitch | Yes | Ask your accountant | Great add-on, not a gift to keep |
| Pump jack model, novelty mug | Stays home | Non-cash | A spouse gift, not a crew gift |
| Gift card or cash | Yes | Taxable | Wanted, but it lands on their T4 |
| Liquor | Not at dry camps | Non-cash | Skip |
Our pick: the Robson 28 oz
The Robson 28 oz holds heat for 12 hours and ice for 24. Its sport cap is listed as leak-proof, so it can ride on its side in a lunch bag on the crew truck. It's $40 for one. Mix 10 or more pieces in one order and every piece drops to $22, engraving included.
For the hand who'd rather have a handle, the Grouse 34 oz is also rated 12 hours hot and 24 cold, with a carry handle and a flip lid. It's $45, or $24.75 each at 10+. We picked it for construction crews, where the cup lives in a truck more than a bag.
Where we don't fit: if your budget is $150 a head, a good backpack cooler or a crew hoodie can be the better main gift. A bottle with his name on it still makes a good second piece.
What to engrave
Last name plus rig number, or the project name. It's the same idea as the hoodie tip, and it settles whose bottle is whose when a dozen identical ones sit in the doghouse. Leave the company logo for the side that faces out, or skip it. Their name is the part they keep.
Every piece in an order can carry a different name. Send us the list of names. You approve a proof before anything is engraved.
When to order
Crews scatter in December. Some are home on days off, some are working through the holidays. Hand gifts out at the last safety meeting before the break, or ship them home.
Our cutoffs: runs of 25 or more by Friday, November 20. Smaller personalized orders by Friday, December 11. Proofs go out within 24 hours, then engraving takes 1 to 3 business days in Calgary.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Christmas gift for oilfield workers?
Something they use on every shift with their name on it. An insulated bottle rated 12 hours hot, with a leak-proof cap and the worker's last name and rig number engraved, beats novelty items. Many camps are dry, so skip liquor.
What do you get a crew of rig hands for Christmas?
One useful item for everyone, personalized per person: an engraved bottle, a hoodie with last names, or a backpack cooler at higher budgets. Keep every gift the same value so nobody on the crew gets shorted.
Are oil sands camps dry?
Many are. Suncor's lodge rules state "The accommodation is alcohol-free," covering rooms, vehicles and common areas. Rules vary by operator and camp, so don't plan a gift that depends on bringing alcohol back to camp.
Are Christmas gifts to employees taxable in Canada?
Cash and near-cash gifts, like gift cards, are always a taxable benefit. Non-cash gifts are tax-free up to $500 a year per employee under CRA policy. Contractors aren't covered by that employee policy. Ask your accountant.
How much should a company spend on crew Christmas gifts?
There's no rule. What matters is equal value for everyone. An engraved 12-hour bottle runs $22 to $24.75 each at 10 or more pieces, which leaves room for a crew dinner on top.
How long does engraving take for a crew order?
We send a proof within 24 hours, then engrave in 1 to 3 business days in Calgary. For Christmas, book runs of 25 or more by November 20 and smaller personalized orders by December 11.
