A new client loves the cut, walks out, and three weeks later tries to rebook with "the stylist with the bangs, second chair." The front desk guesses. That's the job a salon name tag actually does, and most of the tags sold for salons are built for the photo, not for the rebooking.
Here's what a salon tag has to say, what it has to survive, and what it costs in Canada.
The short answer.
Buy an engraved tag with one big first name, a small role line, and a magnet back so it never pins through a stylist's clothes. Expect $12 to $17 a tag in Canada. Two exceptions: a staffer with a pacemaker should wear a pin, and nail techs should keep acrylic tags away from acetone.
Salon name tags in Canada, compared
Prices as each seller listed them on October 18, 2026. Where a page shows no currency code, we say so.
| Seller | Tag | Price | How the name gets on | Back |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zazzle.ca | Hair salon logo name tag, 1.6 mm plastic | CA$12.23 each | Printed, full colour | Safety pin or magnet |
| Getstamps.ca | Engraved name badge, 1" × 3" | $17.00 on sale (was $19.17), no currency code, before tax and shipping | Engraved | Pin or magnet. No minimum |
| 4imprint.ca | Charleston 1" × 3", metallic-finish plastic | C$13.19 each at 25, plus a $65 set-up charge | Printed | Jeweler's pin. Minimum 25 |
| 4imprint.ca | Atlanta Economy 2" × 3", paper insert | C$8.45 each at 25, plus $65 set-up | Printed insert | Jeweler's pin. Minimum 25 |
| LAMOSE | Salon & Spa name tag, 1.5" × 3" or 2" × 3", two-layer acrylic laminate | C$12.50 each (1–10), $11.75 at 21–30, $11.13 at 51–100. No set-up fee, free shipping | Laser engraved in Calgary | Three magnets. No minimum |
The cheapest tag on the list is the paper insert, and it's fine for a one-day bridal event. For a tag someone wears five days a week, the number to compare is the one at your headcount. At 25 tags, 4imprint's Charleston works out to about $15.79 each once the set-up charge is spread across them.
What a salon tag should say
One word, big: the first name. Then the role in small type underneath, such as Senior Stylist, Colourist, Esthetician or Barber. Skip the surname, the scissors clip art and the salon's full address. Your logo can go in the corner, but only if it doesn't shrink the name.
The reason is rebooking. Boulevard's 2023 report on more than 11 million US salon appointments found the top salons turn 70% of first-time visits into a second appointment. Average salons manage 45%. A tag won't close that gap alone. But a client can't ask for a stylist whose name they never caught, and a first name readable from the next chair is the cheapest thing on that list to fix.
Magnet or pin? Magnet, with one exception
Stylists work in black, and a lot of it is thin knit or silky fabric that shows every pin hole. A magnet back clamps the tag through the fabric with a bar behind it, so there's no hole and nothing to snag on a client's hair. That's why our salon tags only come with magnets. We explain the full trade-off in magnetic vs pin name tags.
The exception is anyone on your team with a pacemaker or defibrillator. Medtronic Canada's advice is to "keep any item with a magnet at least 6 in (15 cm) away from the heart device." A name tag sits on the chest, well inside that range. Ask quietly at onboarding, and give that person a pin-back tag. Getstamps and Zazzle both sell pins.
What the tag has to survive
An engraved tag has no ink to wear off, because the letters are the core colour of the laminate showing through the cut. For cleaning, Rowmark, the laminate maker, recommends "mild soap and water whenever possible" and warns against citrus-based cleaners.
Acetone is the one thing to keep away from it. The ACRYLITE chemical-resistance chart rates acrylic "NR", not resistant, for acetone, nail polish and nail polish remover. Our tags are acrylic laminate, so a nail tech who soaks off gel all day can cloud or soften the face of the tag. If that's your shop, wear the tag on a lanyard or apron strap away from the station, or buy an anodized aluminum tag instead. We don't sell those.
Do stylists in Canada have to wear ID?
Neither Alberta nor Ontario requires a name tag. Hairstylist and barber are compulsory certification trades in Alberta, which means only certified journeypersons or registered apprentices can do the restricted work. In Ontario, hairstylist (332A) is compulsory too, and Ontario.ca says certified workers "are required to carry proof of their apprenticeship/certification" and show it to an inspector who asks. That's a card in a wallet, not a badge on a shirt. A name tag is a customer-service choice, not a legal one.
Ordering for a whole salon
A salon academy in Victoria ordered 22 stylist and therapist tags from us in October. They sent one list of names and roles and one logo, and got one proof back before anything was engraved. Our Salon & Spa name tag page takes the same thing: paste one "Name, Role" per line or upload a CSV, add your logo, and we redraw it as a clean vector. Engraving takes 1–3 business days after you approve the proof. Every new hire after that is a single $12.50 tag, so the set keeps matching. The reception desk can have a matching plate too: our desk name plate guide compares ours with four other Canadian options.
Frequently asked questions
How much do salon name tags cost in Canada?
Expect about $12 to $17 per engraved or printed plastic tag for small orders. Printed paper-insert badges start around $8.45 each at 25, plus set-up. LAMOSE engraved salon tags are $12.50 each, dropping to $11.13 at 51–100, with no set-up fee.
Where can I order professional name tags in Canada?
Online, from Canadian-facing sellers such as Getstamps.ca, 4imprint.ca, Zazzle.ca and LAMOSE, which engraves in Calgary and ships across Canada. Ask for a proof before production and check the minimum: 4imprint's badges start at 25 with a $65 set-up charge, while Getstamps and LAMOSE have no minimum.
What are the best name tags for hairstylists?
Engraved tags with a magnetic back. Engraving can't rub off under hairspray and colour, and a magnet doesn't put holes in thin black work clothes. Put the first name in the largest type and the role underneath.
Are magnetic name tags safe with a pacemaker?
Not on the chest. Medtronic Canada advises keeping any item with a magnet at least 6 inches (15 cm) from a heart device. A staffer with a pacemaker or defibrillator should wear a pin-back tag.
Does acetone damage acrylic name tags?
Yes. Acrylic chemical-resistance charts rate acrylic not resistant to acetone and nail polish remover. Nail techs should keep acrylic tags away from the station or choose an anodized aluminum tag.
Do hairstylists in Alberta have to wear a name tag?
No. Hairstylist and barber are compulsory certification trades in Alberta, which controls who may do the work. Neither Alberta nor Ontario rules require a worn name tag.
