A promotion email is read once. The plate with the new title on it is the part they keep, on the desk until the next promotion.

We sell desk name plates, and the cheapest good one we found in Canada isn't ours. Here is who makes them, what they cost on their own sites this week, and when ours is the right call.

The short answer. For one plate this week, buy a 2 × 8 inch engraved plate and frame from a stamp-and-engraving shop: Dominion Stamps in Calgary lists one for $26 and ships most orders within 24 hours. Pay more for walnut if it's a gift. Order from us when a team needs matching plates with a logo.

Five places Canadians buy desk name plates

Search "desk name plate canada" and every result is a shop. Nobody compares them. So we read each one's own product page on October 29, 2026. Prices are in Canadian dollars, for one plate with a name and a title, before tax and shipping.

Who What you get One plate How fast Best for
Dominion Stamps (Calgary) 2 × 8 in engraved plastic plate in a silver, rose gold or black frame $26 "Most orders are produced and shipped within 24 hours" One plate, fast, cheap
Vistaprint.ca Laser-engraved plastic plate, 2 × 8 or 2 × 10 in, six holder options $29.99 at default options; $25 each from 2 Not stated on the page we read Ordering online with a design template
Things Engraved 4 × 1½ in two-tone plate plus a black desk holder, sold separately $34.98 ($19.99 + $14.99) "A few business days plus shipping" A small plate, or a faux leather one at $41.99
Memories Made (Ontario) Solid walnut block, engraved, bevelled edge $60 Not stated on the product page A promotion or retirement gift
LAMOSE (Calgary) 2 × 8 in two-tone engraved plate, clear acrylic stand, five finishes, logo option $40 2 to 3 weeks before it ships, plus shipping A team of matching plates, with a logo

Amazon.ca and Etsy carry many more, at every price. They're fine if you read the seller's reviews. They're not in the table because there's no single price to compare.

Our pick for one plate: the stamp shop

If you need one plate for one desk, Dominion's $26 plate is the one we'd send a friend to. It's the same 2 × 8 size as ours. It costs $14 less. It ships in a day instead of weeks.

Two catches. Custom orders are final sale, so check the spelling twice. Free shipping starts at $100, which one plate won't reach.

Vistaprint is the next-cheapest, and its FAQ is honest about one thing worth knowing: "Our engraved name plates are made in the USA." If you want it engraved in Canada, the stamp shops and the small engravers are where to look.

For a gift: walnut, not plastic

A name plate bought for a promotion, a new job or a retirement is a different thing from one an office manager orders. The person will look at it every day, and it says someone noticed. That's worth spending more on.

For a gift, we'd pick Memories Made's solid walnut plate at $60. Wood reads as a present. Plastic and laminate read as office supplies, ours included. Vistaprint also offers a walnut block holder, but its FAQ says that plate "comes attached to the wood and cannot be changed out", which matters if the title changes again.

Ours costs more and takes longer. Here's what it does that the cheaper plates in the table don't advertise:

  • Paste the whole team at once. The product page has a bulk box: one "Name, Title" per line, or a CSV. Every row shows in the live preview and ships as its own plate.
  • Your logo, redrawn. Upload a fuzzy PNG and we redraw it as a clean vector before the laser touches it. You approve a proof first.
  • It matches the name tags. The plate is the same 1/16 inch two-tone laminate as our engraved name badges. A front desk can wear the badge and sit behind the plate, in the same finish.
  • The plate slides out. When someone is promoted, you replace the plate, not the stand.

The laser cuts through the top colour to the core underneath, so the lettering can't peel or rub off. That's true of any two-tone engraved plate, Dominion's included. It isn't a reason to pick us over them.

Where we don't fit

  • You need it in under three weeks. Our page says to allow 2 to 3 weeks to make, plus shipping. Go to a stamp shop.
  • You want wood, brass or aluminum. Ours is engraved laminate in a clear acrylic stand.
  • You need more than two lines. Ours fits a name and a title, or a logo and a name.
  • It's a door or wall sign. We only sell the desk plate.

Ordering one for Christmas

Because ours takes 2 to 3 weeks before it ships, order by Monday, November 23 if it's a Christmas gift. For anything later, use a shop that ships in days, or give a card that says the plate is coming. Bigger office orders go through our quote form, and we reply within 24 hours.
