The social worker who sat with your family through the hardest year is closing the file before Christmas. You want to give them something. They might have to say no, and the reason is written down in a document you've never seen.

The short answer. A social worker can usually accept a small, inexpensive gift that isn't money, but their employer decides. Canada's social work regulators mostly leave it to the employer's policy. Keep it under $50, add a card that says what they did, and if you can, send a letter to their manager too.

Can a social worker accept a Christmas gift?

Often, yes. But not because their profession says so. We read the codes on October 30, 2026, and most of them don't mention gifts at all.

The one that does is Ontario's. Its practice note on boundaries calls a small gift from a client a "boundary crossing", the least harmful end of the scale. It asks the worker to weigh the timing, the intent and the value. Its example of the gap: "a handcrafted glasses case, made by the client, or a set of tickets prime location for a major league baseball game?" Then it hands the final word to the employer: the worker "must be aware of any policies set by their employer about accepting gifts from clients."

Rule Covers What it says about gifts
Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, Practice Notes (2004) Ontario registrants A small gift is a "boundary crossing". Weigh timing, intent, value, culture and "how often a client offers". Follow the employer's policy.
Ontario Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice (3rd ed., 2023) Ontario registrants In its list of sexual-misconduct behaviours it excludes "giving or receiving culturally appropriate gifts of nominal value". No dollar figure.
Alberta College of Social Workers, Standards of Practice (2023) Alberta registrants The word "gift" doesn't appear. The conflict-of-interest standard asks workers to avoid situations that "may lead to or be perceived as a conflict of interest".
CASW Code of Ethics (2024) National guidance, not a regulator Silent on gifts.
Alberta Health Services Conflict of Interest Bylaw (2019) AHS staff, hospital social workers included Up to $100 per gift and $200 a year from one patient and family together. No cash, cheque or e-transfer. Gift cards count toward the limit.
The Ottawa Hospital, Gifts and Sponsorship Policy (reviewed 2024) Hospital staff "Less than fifty ($50.00) Canadian dollars", never money, reported to a supervisor, shared with colleagues where possible.

So the regulator sets the ethics and the employer sets the number. In Alberta, child intervention workers work for the province, and the province's public service code lists "acceptance of gifts" among the things it governs, and departments can add their own rules on top. We couldn't read that wording online, so we won't guess at a figure.

The practical step is one phone call to the office: "Can our worker accept a small gift from us?" If the answer is no, skip to the last section. There's still a way to thank them.

Timing changes the answer

Ontario's note asks whether the gift comes "at the termination of the helping relationship". That's the difference between a thank-you and a favour. A gift while your case is still open can look like you're hoping for something. A gift when the file closes reads as gratitude.

If your case is ongoing, a card is the safer gift this year. If it's closing, or closed, a small named thing is easy to accept.

Our pick: under $50, their first name, a card that says why

The lowest cap in the table is The Ottawa Hospital's, under $50. Stay below it and the gift fits almost every policy we read. Never give cash.

If your worker does home visits, their coffee rides in the car between them. That's why we'd give the Grouse 12 oz. It's $30, holds 355 ml, keeps coffee hot for 6 hours and cold drinks for 12, and the leakproof flip lid opens with one hand. Text engraving is included, so their first name costs nothing extra.

Keep the engraving to their name, or a word that means something to them. Leave your family's name and anything about the case off it. It's going to sit on a desk where other clients can see it.

The usual social worker gifts, compared

Gift Easy to accept? Still around in March? Our verdict
Cash or e-transfer No. Both employer policies above refuse money No Don't
Gift card Depends. AHS counts it toward $100; other employers may treat it as money Spent and forgotten Ask first
Box of chocolates or baking for the office Yes, and it's shared, which some policies prefer Gone by Friday Good for a whole team
"World's best social worker" mug from a big-box store Yes Maybe, at the back of the cupboard Fine, forgettable
Engraved tumbler with their first name, about $30 Yes, under every cap we read In the car every morning Our pick
A letter to their manager Always In their file Do this whatever else you give

For a foster family thanking a worker and the team behind them, two or three named tumblers work out cheaper than you'd expect. Three Grouse 12 oz come to $21 each, because three pieces are 30% off at checkout, and orders of three or more ship in a gift box.

Personalized orders for Christmas delivery need to be in by Friday, December 11. We email a proof within 24 hours and engrave in 1 to 3 business days in our Calgary workshop after you approve it.

Buying for your own team of social workers

If you're a team lead, a program manager or a foster parent association buying for a whole office, the question flips. You're not asking whether they can accept it. You're asking whether it's taxable.

For employers, the CRA lets you give each employee non-cash gifts worth up to $500 a year, including taxes, without it counting as income. Cash and near-cash gifts don't get that break, and a gift card usually lands on the near-cash side.

At 10 or more pieces in any mix of tumblers, bottles and mugs, our checkout price is 45% off, which brings a Grouse 12 oz to $16.50. Add your agency's logo for $3 and each one is $19.50, with every first name engraved free. Fifteen workers comes to $292.50 before tax, and shipping is free over $65.

One team buyer wrote in an Etsy review on October 17, 2026: "I purchased a tumbler with our work team's logo/mascot for an upcoming gift exchange. Great quality!"

Runs of 25 or more with a logo need artwork, a proof and 5 to 10 business days on the laser in December, so our corporate cutoff is Friday, November 20.

Thanking a whole office?

No minimum. 45% off at 10 or more, a logo is $3 a piece, and every first name is engraved free. Send us the headcount and your date, and a person in our Calgary studio replies within 24 hours.

When a tumbler is the wrong gift

  • The office says no gifts. Then the letter is the gift. Don't make the worker refuse you at the door.
  • Your case is still open and contested. A custody or protection file in court is not the moment. Wait until it closes.
  • You need it tomorrow. Every name is engraved to order. After December 11, buy something local.
  • It'll go in the dishwasher. Our product pages recommend hand-washing to keep the finish looking new. If that won't happen, pick something else.

If they can't accept a gift: write the letter

The Ottawa Hospital's policy suggests it directly: staff "may suggest that the Patient write letters or notes of appreciation." It works anywhere. Address it to the worker's supervisor and name the worker. Say what they did, with one real moment, and what changed for your family because of it.

A gift sits on a desk. A letter goes to the person who manages them, which is something a gift can't do.

Frequently asked questions

Can social workers accept gifts from clients in Canada?

Often, if the gift is small and isn't money, but their employer sets the rule. Ontario's social work college treats a small gift as a "boundary crossing" to be weighed, and tells workers to follow employer policy. Alberta's standards and the national CASW code don't mention gifts. Alberta Health Services allows up to $100 per gift.

How much should I spend on a gift for my social worker?

Stay under $50. That's the lowest cap among the policies we read, from The Ottawa Hospital, so it fits almost anywhere. A $25 to $35 gift is plenty. What matters is the name on it and the card that says why.

Can I give my social worker a gift card?

Ask first. Alberta Health Services allows gift cards within its $100 limit, but other employers may treat a card like cash, and no policy we read allows cash. A named item avoids the question.

How do you show appreciation to a social worker?

Write a letter to their supervisor that names them and describes one moment that mattered. Add a small gift only if the office allows it. If more than one person worked on your file, thank the team with something shared.

Is it OK to give a social worker a gift while the case is open?

It's safer to wait. Ontario's practice note asks whether a gift comes at the end of the helping relationship, and a gift during an open case can look like you expect something. A card is fine any time. Save the gift for when the file closes.

What can an employer give social workers for Christmas?

Non-cash gifts up to $500 per employee per year, including taxes, are tax-free under CRA policy. Gift cards usually count as near-cash and are taxable. At 10 or more, our Grouse 12 oz is $16.50, or $19.50 with your logo, with first names engraved free.
