Ask a room of rental hosts what walks out the door and someone will say it in two words. "Coffee mugs…." That was a full reply in an r/airbnb_hosts thread called "What disappears most?", and nobody argued.
So before you put your cabin's name on forty mugs, decide which mugs you want guests to take home. That one decision changes what you should buy.
The short answer. Don't brand the whole cupboard. Stock plain restaurant mugs for everyday use; they cost $3 to $4 and guests leave them. Then add a small run of engraved steel camp mugs with your rental's name, and sell them as the take-home. A logo mug that goes missing is a loss. One a guest pays for is marketing.

Branded mugs for a rental, compared
Prices below are from each supplier's Canadian site on October 17, 2026. Notice the minimums: most promo suppliers start at 36 or more, which is a lot of mugs for a three-bedroom cabin.
| Option | Price each | Minimum | Setup | Best job in a rental |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain restaurant-supply mug | $3–4 (host's figure) | None | None | The everyday cupboard |
| 4imprint.ca Challenger 11 oz ceramic, printed logo | C$3.99 at 36 (sale) | 36 | C$55 | A branded cupboard you expect to lose |
| Staples Promo Evora 11 oz ceramic, cork base | $9.15 at 36 (currency not labelled) | 36 | Free | A nicer printed welcome mug |
| CanPromos Santos 12 oz ceramic | C$11.20 at 72 | 72 | C$65 | Multi-unit operators |
| Staples Promo vacuum camp mug 14 oz | $22.20 at 25 (currency not labelled) | 25 | Not stated | Insulated, logo only |
| LAMOSE Hudson 18 oz camp mug, engraved | C$40 for one, C$22 each at 10+ | None | Engraving included | The take-home you sell |
Two ways to read that table. If you want every mug in the cupboard to carry your logo, the printed ceramic at four dollars is the honest pick, and we'd tell you to buy it. If you want a mug a guest actually pays to keep, it has to be one they'd buy in a shop. That's the row we're in.
Will guests take branded mugs?
Yes. Plan on it. In a May 2026 r/airbnb_hosts thread on branded items, one host wrote: "I think they will go missing often, guest will take them as souvenirs." Another, who puts logo mugs in a welcome basket, said they "go missing usually but are cheap to replace. We do count those though."
The bigger survey is from the UK. Aviva polled 1,000 home-share hosts in 2019: 60% had had an unpleasant incident with a guest, and 48% of that group had had items stolen. We found no Canadian survey, so treat that as direction, not a Canadian number.
Airbnb won't make you whole on a mug, either. AirCover for Hosts does cover "missing items", but you have to file within 14 days of checkout, and Airbnb's terms ask for a police report on theft. Nobody does that for a $4 mug.
So the useful question isn't how to stop it. It's how to make the mug that leaves pay for itself.
Sell the souvenir instead of losing it
Some hosts already do this. In a 2019 r/airbnb_hosts thread, a guest described their host's souvenir mug: 6€, paid into a piggy bank in the flat for a children's charity. The money mattered less than the move: the mug stopped being stolen and started being bought.
Here's how we'd set it up for a cabin:
- Keep the cupboard plain. One host in a July 2026 thread bought 24 restaurant-supply mugs "two years ago and still have 18 left" at $3–4 each. That's your daily stock.
- Put two engraved mugs on the shelf, not in the cupboard. A small card says they're for sale and how to pay.
- Price it like a shop would. At $22 a mug for 10 or more, a $35 tag covers the next one plus some. (Our guide to Canadian souvenirs covers what else visitors bring home.)
- Count them at turnover, the way the welcome-basket host does. A missing one is a sale you invoice, not a loss you absorb.
The marketing is the part you can't buy with printed ceramic. Another host in the May thread gives guests logo lanterns at "about $8 each and people have tagged the cabin with those so I consider it worthwhile." A camp mug at the campfire gets photographed for the same reason.
What to engrave on a rental mug
Not a QR code, and not your phone number. Engrave what makes the stay theirs:
- The property's name, small, as a mark rather than an ad.
- The place. The lake, the valley, the trailhead. "Spray Lakes" is what a guest remembers. A logo alone rarely is.
- Coordinates or an elevation line. Guests who hiked to it remember the number.
One host in the May thread said they'd "automatically assume the contents of anything branded were the absolute cheapest available." That's the risk with a loud logo on a thin mug. A quiet mark on a heavy steel mug reads the other way.
Will it survive a rental dishwasher?
The engraving will. A laser cuts through the powder coat into bare steel, so there's no ink to wash off. The coloured powder coat around it is a different story: our own product page says hand-wash recommended to keep the finish looking new. Guests will put it in the dishwasher anyway. If that bothers you, choose a dark colour, where wear shows less, or keep the engraved mugs as shelf stock until they're sold.
Printed ceramic has the opposite problem. Suppliers like Vistaprint list it as dishwasher-safe, and ceramic chips or breaks when it hits a tile floor.
Why we'd pick the Hudson 18 oz for a cabin
It looks like a cabin mug because it is one: an open camp mug with a thick handle, no lid to lose, 18 oz (532 ml) and 3.7 inches wide. It's rated to keep coffee hot for 6 hours, which covers a slow morning on the deck. It's $40 for one, and $22 each at 10 or more, with the engraving included.
We engrave it in our Calgary workshop. Proof first, then 1–3 business days after you approve. A cabin resort recently ordered 100 enamel mugs from us with its logo engraved, so rentals already buy this way.
Where we don't fit: if you run 40 units and want a branded mug in every cupboard at the lowest price, buy printed ceramic from 4imprint or Staples Promo. We won't beat four dollars, and we don't try.

Design your HudsonFrequently asked questions
How much does a custom mug cost in Canada?
Printed ceramic logo mugs run about $4 to $11 each, with minimums of 36 to 72 and a C$55 to C$65 setup fee at most promo suppliers. An engraved insulated steel mug costs more: the LAMOSE Hudson 18 oz is C$40 for one and C$22 each at 10 or more, with no minimum and no setup fee.
Should Airbnb hosts put branded mugs in the rental?
Put plain mugs in the cupboard and branded ones on a shelf for sale. Hosts on r/airbnb_hosts list mugs among the things that go missing most, and AirCover claims for missing items need to be filed within 14 days, with a police report for theft, which nobody does for a mug.
How much should I charge guests for a souvenir mug?
Price it like a gift shop: roughly one and a half times what you paid. At C$22 a mug for 10 or more, a C$35 tag covers the next mug and some of your time.
Which website lets me create custom mugs in Canada?
For printed ceramic in bulk: 4imprint.ca, Staples Promo, CanPromos and Vistaprint. For laser-engraved steel from a single piece: LAMOSE, in Calgary.
Are engraved mugs dishwasher safe?
The engraving is permanent because it's cut into bare steel. The powder-coat colour lasts longer if the mug is washed by hand, so dark colours are the safer pick for a rental where guests use the dishwasher.
Does Airbnb cover guests stealing mugs?
AirCover for Hosts covers missing items in principle. You have to file within 14 days of the guest's checkout, theft claims need a police report, and payouts can be reduced for depreciation, so small items like mugs are rarely worth a claim.
The mug a guest pays for is the one they keep. Make it the one with your place on it.
