Put a prize on a clean safety record and you've given someone a reason to hide an injury. Picture day 340 of a 365-day streak, with the crew barbecue and the jackets riding on it, and an apprentice who just rolled an ankle on the rebar. The award you picked decides whether that ankle gets reported.

Search for safety awards and you get US catalogues, marketplaces and press releases. Here's the Canadian version: what to give a crew, what the CRA says about it, and how to mark a milestone without punishing the next person who reports.

The short answer. Mark an injury-free milestone with something every worker on the crew gets, that nobody can lose by reporting, and that they'll use on every shift. An insulated bottle engraved with their name, the milestone and the date fits all three. Put the actual prizes on hazard and near-miss reports, not on injury counts.

Mark the milestone. Reward the reporting.

There are two kinds of safety numbers. Lagging ones count what already went wrong: lost-time injuries, recordables, days since the last incident. Leading ones count what people did to stop it: hazards flagged, near misses written up, toolbox talks attended, inspections done.

A prize tied to a lagging number has a known flaw. The US regulator, OSHA, put it plainly in an October 2018 memo on incentive programs. Rate-based programs are allowed "as long as they are not implemented in a manner that discourages reporting." It also warned that telling workers they won't be punished may not be enough when "the consequence for reporting will be a lost opportunity to receive a substantial reward."

OSHA's fix is the one we'd pick too: add "an incentive program that rewards employees for identifying unsafe conditions in the workplace." So split the two jobs. The raffle, the gift card draw and the bonus go to the people filing hazard and near-miss reports. The milestone itself gets a keepsake everyone receives, including the person whose injury ended the last streak.

Safety awards, ranked

Here's how the usual options hold up against the two questions that matter: can reporting an injury cost someone the award, and is it still around once the banner comes down?

Award Can reporting cost it? CRA treatment Our take
1. Engraved bottle or tumbler for every worker No, if everyone on the crew gets one Non-cash. Counts toward the $500 a year, engraving included Best keepsake. It rides in the truck every shift with the milestone on it
2. Plaque or trophy for the site No Listed as a trivial item, outside the $500 Good for the trailer wall. Nobody takes it home
3. Crew meal or barbecue Only if it's promised in advance for a streak Not taxable if open to all staff and $150 or less a head Great on the day. Hold it after the milestone, don't dangle it before
4. Branded jacket or hoodie No, if everyone gets one Non-cash, inside the $500 Strong. A jacket gets seen far more than a cup. Sizing a crew of 60 is the catch
5. Gift card or prepaid Visa Usually yes. It's the classic streak prize Prepaid cards are near-cash and always taxable Use it for hazard-report draws, not for the streak
6. Raffle for a big prize (truck, TV, trip) Yes, if entries depend on staying injury-free Likely over the $500 for the winner This is the program OSHA warns about. Skip it for lagging numbers

The data behind number one: in ASI's 2026 Ad Impressions Study, 87% of people said they'd keep a branded cup or bottle because it's useful, and more than three in four use it weekly. Outerwear draws more total impressions over its life, about 9,000 against roughly 1,300 for a cup, which is why the jacket is a close fourth. We sell bottles, and we'd still put a jacket on this list.

Are safety awards taxable in Canada?

The CRA sorts what you hand employees into three buckets. Its own words:

  • Gift: "for a special occasion such as a religious holiday, a birthday, a wedding, or the birth of a child."
  • Award: "for an employment-related accomplishment such as outstanding service, or employees' suggestions."
  • Reward: "provided to your employees for performance-related reasons and is a taxable benefit for the employee."

The CRA's page doesn't mention safety at all. So here's how we read it, and it's a reading, not a ruling. A milestone the whole crew reached together, marked with the same item for everyone, looks like an award for an accomplishment. An item paid out to individuals for hitting their own targets looks like a reward, and rewards are taxable. Check the wording of your program with your accountant before it goes on the lunchroom wall.

Three more CRA rules to plan around. Non-cash gifts and awards are tax-free up to $500 a year per employee, including tax, and a Christmas gift from the same year shares that $500. The value you count includes engraving and logos. And plaques, trophies, mugs, T-shirts and coffee are trivial items that don't count at all.

What to engrave on a safety award

Engrave the worker's name, not only your logo. A bottle with the company mark looks like swag. One with their name, the number and the date is one they keep.

  • Their name. First name and last initial is plenty.
  • The milestone in plain words. "1,000,000 hours LTI-free" or "365 days, zero lost time."
  • The site or project and the date. "Northeast Station · 2026."

Keep it to three short lines. It reads from across the tailgate, and it still makes sense five years from now.

For a crew, we'd pick the Grouse 34 oz: $45, 12 hours hot, 24 hours cold, with a carry handle. If they'd rather have a bottle with a one-hand sport cap, the Robson 21 oz bottle is $40 with the same 12 and 24 hours. Engraved text is free on both.

In Alberta, celebrate the COR too

If you hold a Certificate of Recognition, you already chase one milestone that is purely about process: the COR audit. WCB-Alberta's Partnerships in Injury Reduction program pays a "10% industry rate refund for the first year and then five % every year you maintain the COR." Improving your record earns 1% back for every 1% of improvement, up to 20%.

A COR pass is earned by paperwork, inspections and training, the leading work nobody claps for. It's the safest milestone to celebrate because no injury report can take it away. If the refund lands, spending part of it on the crew that earned the audit score is hard to argue with.

When to order for a year-end safety dinner

If your safety dinner is in December, it lands in the same weeks as every Christmas order in the country. Our production time is 1 to 3 business days after you approve the proof, and custom bulk artwork takes 5 to 10. For runs of 25 or more that need to arrive before Christmas, order by Friday, November 20.

Collect the names from the site supervisor, not HR. The supervisor knows who was actually on the job, including the subtrades you want in the photo.

Send us the crew list and the milestone, and we'll send a free proof within a day. No minimum order.

Safety award questions, answered

What are some examples of safety awards?

Engraved bottles or tumblers for every worker, site plaques and trophies, crew meals, branded jackets, and gift-card draws. The best programs split them: a keepsake everyone gets for the milestone, and prizes for hazard and near-miss reports.

What are some good safety-related prizes?

Prizes work best on leading indicators. Draw a gift card or a tool from everyone who filed a hazard or near-miss report that month. Avoid big prizes that depend on staying injury-free, because they give people a reason not to report.

What are milestone awards?

A milestone award marks a number the crew reached together, such as 365 days or 1,000,000 hours without a lost-time injury. It should go to everyone who worked the stretch, carry the number and the date, and be something they'll keep.

Are safety awards taxable in Canada?

The CRA doesn't name safety awards. Non-cash awards for an employment-related accomplishment are tax-free up to $500 a year per employee, including tax. Rewards for individual performance, and all cash and prepaid cards, are taxable. Confirm your program's wording with your accountant.

Should safety incentives be based on days without injury?

Not on their own. OSHA's 2018 memo says rate-based programs are allowed only if they don't discourage reporting, and it recommends also rewarding workers for identifying unsafe conditions. Mark the streak with a keepsake and put the prizes on reporting.

What should I engrave on a safety award?

The worker's name, the milestone in plain words, and the site and year. Three short lines, for example "Sam R. / 365 days, zero lost time / Northeast Station 2026."
