Diwali is Sunday, November 8 this year. A gift that lands on the 12th isn't a Diwali gift anymore. It's an early Christmas present with a lamp on the card, and the people who celebrate will notice.

Most of what you'll find on Diwali corporate gifts is written for offices in India or sold as a hamper. Here's the Canadian version: what to give, what the CRA says about it, and the date it has to be on the desk.

The short answer. Give a box of mithai from a local sweet shop and one engraved piece with each person's name on it. Hand them out by Thursday, November 5, before the five days of Diwali begin. The sweets are the tradition. The engraved mug or tumbler, $27 to $40, is what's still on the desk next Diwali.

Give Diwali its own gift, on time

The easy move for a Canadian office is to fold Diwali into the Christmas order. It saves one purchase order. It also tells the people who celebrate that their festival is a footnote.

Diwali 2026 runs five days, from Friday, November 6 to Tuesday, November 10. The main night, Lakshmi Puja, is Sunday the 8th. So the last working day before the festival starts is Thursday, November 5. That's your deadline, not the 8th.

There's a tax reason to plan it separately too. The CRA's $500 limit on employee gifts is per year, not per occasion. A Diwali gift and a Christmas gift to the same person share one $500. More on that below.

Diwali corporate gift ideas, compared

Search for Diwali corporate gifts in Canada and page one is hamper sellers, Etsy and Pinterest. Here's how the usual options hold up once the festival is over.

Gift How long it lasts Watch out for Our take
Box of mithai (Indian sweets) The week Order from a shop your team already knows. Freshness matters more than the box Give it. It's the tradition, and nothing we make replaces it
Dry fruit hamper A few weeks Nut allergies. It's what most hamper sellers push, so it blends in Fine, but it doesn't say anything about you
Diyas or candles The festival Lovely on the night, then packed away for a year A nice add-on, not the gift
Engraved mug or tumbler with their name Years Needs a name list and about three weeks We sell these, so weigh that. It's the one they'll keep. Pair it with the sweets
Prepaid Visa or Mastercard Until it's spent The CRA treats it as near-cash, so it's a taxable benefit to the employee Skip for staff
Wine or spirits One evening The Sikh code of conduct forbids alcohol, and so does Jain practice. Many Hindus don't drink either Don't

The pairing is the point. Sweets make the day. The engraved piece is what's on the desk in March.

Who celebrates Diwali in Canada

Here are Statistics Canada's 2021 Census numbers:

  • 828,195 Canadians reported Hindu as their religion. Over half of them (55.3%) live in the Toronto area.
  • 771,790 reported Sikh. Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, with lights of their own.
  • 8,275 reported Jain. Jains mark Mahavira Nirvana Diwas at the same time.
  • Alberta alone has 78,520 Hindus. British Columbia has 81,320.

Now the number that should change how you build the list. 2.6 million Canadians identified as South Asian in 2021. About 1.6 million reported Hindu, Sikh or Jain. Those aren't the same people. A South Asian surname doesn't tell you who celebrates, and plenty of people with no South Asian background do.

So don't sort your staff list by name. Give the gift to the whole team, the way you would at Christmas. Or announce it and let people opt in.

What to engrave

Their name on the front. That's what makes it theirs and keeps it on the desk. If you want a date, "Diwali 2026" in small type under the name works.

Your logo goes on the back, small, if at all. Engraved text is free on every LAMOSE order. A logo cut on the laser is $2 a piece.

What to spend

Budget per person Pick Why
About $40 with sweets Peyto 12 oz mug, $27 The morning chai or coffee cup. Seen every day at the same desk
About $50 with sweets Grouse 16 oz tumbler, $35 Goes in the car and the bag, not just the office
Clients and senior team Emerald 16 oz, $40 Our 316 stainless tumbler. Save it for the people who carry the account

Give everyone on the team the same thing. A gift that varies by title reads as a performance review.

How the CRA treats a Diwali gift

The CRA's rule is plain: "A gift has to be for a special occasion such as a religious holiday, a birthday, a wedding, or the birth of a child." Diwali is a religious holiday. It gets the same treatment as a Christmas gift.

  • The $500 limit is per year, per employee. Non-cash gifts with a combined value of $500 or less, including tax, aren't a taxable benefit. Diwali and Christmas count toward the same $500.
  • Engraving counts toward the value. The CRA says to "include items whose FMV may have been altered by a logo or engraving."
  • Mugs are named as trivial. The CRA lists "coffee or tea, T-shirts, mugs, plaques and trophies" as small items that don't count toward the $500.
  • Prepaid cards are near-cash. A prepaid Visa, Mastercard or Amex is a taxable benefit, whatever the amount.
  • Client gifts are different. If you send sweets to clients, food and drink are deemed 50% under section 67.1(1) of the Income Tax Act.

This is how we read the rules, not tax advice. Your accountant has the final word.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best corporate gift for Diwali?

A box of mithai from a local sweet shop, paired with one engraved piece that carries the person's name. The sweets honour the tradition. The engraved mug or tumbler, $27 to $40, is still in use long after the festival.

What are some good Diwali gift ideas in Canada?

Mithai, dry fruits, diyas, and one useful thing with the person's name on it. For a Canadian office, skip alcohol and prepaid Visa cards. Many people who celebrate don't drink, and the CRA treats prepaid cards as a taxable benefit.

What is an appropriate gift to give for Diwali?

Something sweet and something that lasts. Avoid alcohol. Give the same gift to everyone on the team, and hand it out before the five days of Diwali begin. In 2026 that's Thursday, November 5.

When is Diwali 2026?

The main day, Lakshmi Puja, is Sunday, November 8, 2026. The five days run from Friday, November 6 to Tuesday, November 10.

Are Diwali gifts to employees taxable in Canada?

Usually not. The CRA counts a religious holiday as a special occasion. Non-cash gifts up to $500 a year per employee, including tax, aren't a taxable benefit. Diwali and Christmas share that one $500. Prepaid cards and cash are always taxable.

Can ITC be claimed on Diwali gifts given to employees?

That question comes from India's GST rules, where ITC means input tax credit. In Canada, the rule most employers need is the CRA's $500 gift limit above. Whether you can claim GST/HST input tax credits on staff gifts is a question for your accountant.

Do Sikhs and Jains celebrate Diwali?

Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, and Jains mark Mahavira Nirvana Diwas at the same time. Statistics Canada counted 771,790 Sikhs and 8,275 Jains in 2021, alongside 828,195 Hindus.

Should I give Diwali gifts to the whole team?

Yes, or announce it and let people opt in. Don't guess from names. In 2021, 2.6 million Canadians identified as South Asian and about 1.6 million reported Hindu, Sikh or Jain. They aren't the same people.
