A branded tumbler is supposed to advertise you. Most of the ones handed out at trade shows do the opposite: a printed logo that flakes off in the dishwasher within a few months, so the tumbler outlives the brand on it by years. If the mark doesn't survive, the tumbler was never really branded. It was just borrowed.

A printed logo sits on top of the steel. Every wash cycle, every scratch from a keychain in the same bag, wears at it. Engraving cuts through the powder coat into the bare steel underneath. There's nothing sitting on the surface to wear off, because the mark isn't on the surface. It's in it.

The bulk-print route makes sense at real scale, when you're ordering a thousand units for a conference giveaway and the logo just needs to survive the flight home.
