Somewhere in a supply closet is a shelf of plaques nobody asked for. Five years, ten years, twenty: the wording changes, the shape doesn't. HR ordered them from a catalog, an admin engraved a name plate, and the employee took it home and put it in a drawer.
The short answer. Skip the plaque and the points-catalog gift card. For a years-of-service gift, engrave the hire date or the milestone year onto a steel bottle or tumbler, sized up as the years add up: modest at year five, the lifetime-warrantied piece at year twenty or retirement. It also clears the CRA's separate long-service exemption, which a gift card never does.

Every service-award list is a plaque, a trophy, or a points catalog
Search "employee service award ideas" or "years of service award ideas" and the results are O.C. Tanner, Achievers, BI Worldwide, Successories, Baudville, Tango Card: companies that sell recognition programs, not things. A points balance you redeem for a gift card. A certificate with a gold seal. A trophy that sits next to last year's trophy. Reddit's r/humanresources threads on the same search mostly agree on what not to do: don't give a plaque nobody asked for.
None of them make the object itself. They sell the program around it.
What the CRA actually allows for a long-service gift
None of those platforms mention the tax rule that applies. Verified against canada.ca (see our full breakdown of CRA gift rules for employees): a long-service award gets its own $500 non-cash exemption, on top of the regular annual gift exemption, as long as it isn't a gift card, the employee has 5+ years of service, and it's been at least 5 years since their last long-service award.
A points-catalog reward that converts to a gift card doesn't qualify. A generic gift box from a curator might, technically, but it isn't tied to the employee or the milestone. An engraved bottle with the hire date on it is both compliant and specific.
Size the gift to the milestone
A five-year mark and a twenty-year mark aren't the same occasion, so we don't size them the same:
- Year five. Grouse tumbler, $30–45 depending on size. Engrave the hire date, not just "Congratulations."
- Year ten to fifteen. Robson 21 oz bottle, $40. Twelve hours hot, twenty-four cold. Built for the desk and the commute both.
- Year twenty, or retirement. Emerald 16 oz tumbler, $40, 316 medical-grade steel with a lifetime warranty on the piece itself: the only tier in our catalog we'll say that about.
Plaque vs. gift card vs. gift box vs. engraved steel
| Award | Tied to their milestone? | Counts as the CRA long-service exemption? | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plaque or trophy | Year number only | Usually, but rarely used again | Recognition-program vendor |
| Points-catalog gift card | No: generic | No: gift cards don't qualify | Recognition-program vendor |
| Curated gift box | No: same box for everyone | Possibly, but not the point | Curator, assembles other brands |
| Engraved steel bottle or tumbler | Yes: hire date or milestone year, permanent | Yes, when the 5-year conditions are met | LAMOSE, made to order in Calgary |
For a 10 to 15 year milestone

Frequently asked questions
What's a good years-of-service award idea besides a plaque?
A steel bottle or tumbler engraved with the employee's hire date or the milestone year. It's used daily instead of stored in a drawer, and the personalization costs nothing extra.
Are employee service awards taxable in Canada?
Long-service awards get a separate $500 non-cash exemption from the CRA, on top of the regular annual gift exemption, if the award isn't a gift card, the employee has 5+ years of service, and it's been at least 5 years since their last long-service award. See our full CRA gift rules breakdown.
What should you give for a 20-year work anniversary?
Something that reads as a real milestone, not a routine one. Our Emerald 16 oz, 316 medical-grade steel with a lifetime warranty, is the one product in our catalog built for that tier.
Do points-catalog gift cards count as a long-service award for CRA purposes?
No. The CRA's long-service exemption specifically excludes gift cards, even closed-loop ones, from the non-cash long-service category. A points balance that converts to a card doesn't qualify.
