The boxes are half-unpacked. There's a candle on the counter from someone at work, a plant from a neighbor, and a bottle of wine nobody's opened yet. In six months, one of those things will still be around. It won't be the candle.
The short answer. Skip the candle, the plant, and the basket of jam. Engrave the new address, the move-in date, or the family name onto a steel bottle or tumbler they'll use every morning. Something built to survive the year of unpacking, not just the first week on the counter.

Every housewarming gift guide recommends the same five things
Search "housewarming gift ideas" and the results are Crate & Barrel, Williams-Sonoma, IKEA, and a Wirecutter roundup, all running the same list: a candle, a plant, a cutting board, a set of towels, a bottle of wine. Search "personalized housewarming gift" and it's a different set of names but the same problem: a monogram reseller, a photo-gift site, a print-on-demand broker. None of them make anything. They curate other people's products or print a name on something generic.
The traditional housewarming trio (bread so the house is never hungry, salt so life has flavor, wine so it's never thirsty) is a nice gesture. It's also symbolic on purpose: eaten, drunk, or gone within a week. Nobody expects the bread to last.
What survives the first year in a new house
We laser-engrave steel bottles and tumblers in our Calgary workshop, and the pattern with what people keep after a move is the same one we see with wedding and graduation gifts: it's tied to a permanent, specific detail, not a generic script-font "Welcome Home."
- The new address. Cut into steel, it's the one detail that's true the day the last box disappears, and still true a year later.
- The move-in date. Marks the day the packing tape and pizza-on-the-floor phase officially ended.
- The family name. Works whether it's a first apartment or a fifth house, no rewording needed.
The mark is laser-cut through the finish into bare stainless steel. It doesn't fade, peel, or wash off, unlike a printed mug or an iron-on towel, which survive a handful of dishwasher cycles and no more.
Candle vs. gift basket vs. monogrammed mug vs. engraved steel
| Gift | Tied to the move? | Still around in a year? | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candle or plant | No: generic | No: burns down or needs looking after | Retailer, assembled not made |
| Curated gift basket | No: generic assortment | No: consumed within weeks | Curator, assembles other brands |
| Monogrammed mug or towel | Initial only, usually | Sometimes: print fades after washes | Print-on-demand broker |
| Engraved steel bottle or tumbler | Yes: address, date, or name, permanent | Yes: used daily, doesn't wear out | LAMOSE, made to order in Calgary |

Frequently asked questions
What's a good housewarming gift that isn't food or flowers?
Something they'll actually reach for: a steel bottle or tumbler engraved with the new address, the move-in date, or the family name. It survives the year of unpacking instead of getting eaten or watered.
How much should you spend on a housewarming gift?
Most engraved bottles and tumblers land between $20 and $45, enough to feel considered without reading as an obligation. Group gifts from coworkers or family are quoted per project.
What are the traditional housewarming gifts: bread, salt, wine?
That's an old folk custom: bread so the house is never hungry, salt so life has flavor, wine so it's never thirsty. It's a nice gesture, and it's meant to be symbolic, not kept, worth giving alongside something that lasts, not instead of it.
Is a personalized gift too much for a housewarming party?
No. Engraved bottles and tumblers land in the same $20–45 range as a candle set or a bottle of wine. Personalizing it costs nothing extra; it just means it's the one gift still in use next year.
