You drew a name you can barely put a face to. The limit is $30. The exchange is in eleven days, and the internet's best idea is a pack of sticky notes with a joke on them.
The short answer. If the limit is $15 or less, buy something they can eat or use up. At $25 to $50, buy one useful thing they will reach for every day, like a tumbler or a small bottle, and engrave one detail you noticed about them. Order it at least two weeks before the exchange, not before Christmas.

The budget decides the gift, not the person
Every guide ranking for this search sells the same list: socks, soap, chocolate, a candle, a funny notebook. Most are written by the shops that sell the list. Google's own summary splits the options into funny, practical or edible, then asks you to decide.
So here is the decision.
Under $15, go consumable. Coffee, good chocolate, a local hot sauce. It gets used, it gets finished, nobody has to find a shelf for it. That is the right gift at that price.
From $25 up, stop buying consumables. Thirty dollars of treats is gone by New Year's. Thirty dollars of steel is on their desk in March. At that budget, the chocolate is the waste.
And skip the gag gift at any price. It gets one laugh at the party. Then someone has to carry it home, and it goes in the drawer. A 2010 Ipsos poll for Kijiji found 40% of Canadians get at least one unwanted gift every holiday season, and 47% pretend to love it anyway.
Engrave the thing you noticed
A Secret Santa gift is hard because you are buying for someone you don't know well. The fix is small. Find one real detail and put it on the gift.
Their dog's name, from the photo on their monitor. The phrase they say in every meeting. The team they cheer for. Their initials, if that is all you have.
We have read the gift notes on our orders for years. One from December 2019 reads, in full: "Your Secret Santa thinks your doggo is mega cute." Six words, and the recipient knows someone noticed. Put that same detail on the gift itself and it lasts longer than the card.
That is the whole trick. A name or a detail turns a $27 tumbler from a thing into a gift, and it can't be regifted to the next person in the draw.
The ranking: what to buy at each limit
| Limit | Our pick | Price | Why it wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $15 | Something edible from a local shop | $10–15 | At this price, used-up beats kept. |
| Under $20, Canadian | Engraved hockey puck | $17.99 | An official Winnwell puck with their name or team on it. The hockey fan in the office will keep it. |
| Under $30 | Peyto 12 oz | $27 | A small tumbler with a sliding lid that lives on a desk. Engraving is free, so the whole budget goes to the cup. |
| Under $50 | Grouse 16 oz | $35 | Wide mouth, leakproof flip lid, 6 hours hot and 12 cold. It survives a commute in a bag. |
| $40 exactly | Emerald 16 oz | $40 | Our 316 stainless tumbler, 24 hours cold. The pick when the limit is $40 and you want the gift to look like it cost more. |
My pick for the most common office limit, $30, is the Peyto 12 oz. It is sized for the coffee they already drink at their desk. That is the whole argument.
If the Secret Santa is remote and you are mailing it, go with the Grouse. The flip lid closes fully, so it travels.

Order by the exchange date, not Christmas
This is where most people get caught. Our cutoff for personalized gifts to arrive before Christmas is Friday, December 11. Your office exchange is almost never on Christmas. It is usually the last Friday before people start leaving, or the party, or earlier.
A buyer wrote to us in late November 2024: "This is for coworker secret Santa and we exchange on the 6th." December 6th. That is two and a half weeks before the date most guides tell you to plan around.
We send a digital proof within 24 hours and engrave in 1–3 business days after you approve it. The rest is Canada Post or UPS, and December transit is the slow part. Give it two weeks.
| Your exchange is on | Order an engraved gift by |
|---|---|
| Friday, December 4 | Friday, November 20 |
| Friday, December 11 | Friday, November 27 |
| Friday, December 18 | Friday, December 4 |
| Christmas week, or delivered to their home | Friday, December 11 (our published cutoff) |
One more thing: ship it to your own address, not the office. Nobody keeps a secret like a box with your name on the label sitting at reception. The full calendar is on our holiday gifting page.
What not to engrave
Keep it to something they would show a stranger. A first name, initials, their dog, a team, a phrase everybody already knows they say. Leave out the inside joke from the one bad offsite, anything about age or weight, and the manager's nickname. It will sit on their desk all year. Engrave something they are happy to explain.
Questions people ask
What's a good office Secret Santa gift?
Something they will use at work every day. At $25 to $50, a tumbler or small insulated mug engraved with their name or one detail you know about them beats any listicle gift. Under $15, bring coffee or a treat they can finish.
How much should you spend on Secret Santa?
Whatever the group agreed, and not a dollar more. Going over makes the next person look cheap. The Canadian guides that rank for this search mostly cluster around $25, $30 and $50 limits, which is also where a good engraved gift lands.
What are unique Secret Santa gift ideas?
Unique rarely means strange. It means specific. The same $27 tumbler becomes unique the moment it has their dog's name on it, because no one else in the office is getting that one.
What is a uniquely Canadian Secret Santa gift?
Maple treats from a local shop at the low end. At $18, an official Winnwell hockey puck engraved with their name or team. Above that, anything made or finished by a Canadian maker. Every piece we sell is engraved in our Calgary workshop.
Is an engraved gift too personal for a coworker?
Not if you engrave the right thing. A first name, initials or the name of their dog is friendly, not intimate. Leave out anything you'd hesitate to say out loud at the party.
When should I order a personalized Secret Santa gift?
Two weeks before the exchange. For a Friday, December 11 office party, order by Friday, November 27. For delivery before Christmas, our cutoff is Friday, December 11.
The sticky notes will get a laugh. The cup with the dog's name on it will still be on their desk next December.
