The wine is open by nine. The chocolates are gone by Tuesday. By the next October, nobody at that table can tell you who brought what, and that is fine, unless the person who cooked for twelve is someone you will be thanking every year for the rest of your life.

The short answer. For a host you have met once, bring something they can open and finish: a bottle of Canadian wine, maple treats or good coffee. For the person who hosts Thanksgiving every year, bring something they will keep and use, like a mug engraved with their name. Skip cut flowers and any food they didn't ask for.

One question decides the gift

Every guide ranking for this search gives the same list: maple syrup, chocolate, wine, a candle, a basket. Most of them are written by companies that sell baskets. The list is not wrong. It just answers the wrong question.

The question is: will you be at this table next October?

If the answer is no (a friend's parents, a new partner's family, a colleague's open house), bring a consumable. It says thank you without asking for shelf space. Nobody wants a stranger's keepsake.

If the answer is yes, the rules flip. Your mother-in-law has hosted for twenty years. Your sister took over the turkey when your parents downsized. A fourth bottle of wine won't register. Something with their name on it, that comes out of the cupboard every morning, will.

The usual hostess gifts, compared

Order at least two weeks before the holiday weekend. That covers the free proof, 1–3 business days on the laser and transit, with a little room to spare. If your date is closer than that, send us a note before you order and we'll reply within 24 hours with what's realistic for your address.

Everything in the first five rows can be bought on the way over. Only the last one takes planning, which is why it's the one that gets noticed.

What not to bring

Three things make a host's day harder, and they all come from good intentions.

  • Food nobody asked for. The oven schedule for a Thanksgiving dinner is planned down to the half hour. An extra casserole needs oven space that doesn't exist. Ask first, and if they say no, believe them.
  • Loose flowers. They arrive exactly when the gravy needs stirring. If you want flowers, bring them already in a vase, or send them the next day.
  • Anything that needs attention tonight. A gift they have to unwrap, assemble or explain in front of everyone pulls them out of the kitchen. Hand it over, say it's for later, and let them put it on the counter.

When the host says "don't bring anything"

They mean don't bring food. They are not asking you to arrive empty-handed, and in most Canadian homes you won't. Bring something small that needs nothing from them tonight: a bottle for later, a bag of coffee for tomorrow morning, or a gift in a box with a card that says "open this after we've gone."

The other gift they will actually value costs nothing. Stay and dry the dishes.

What to engrave for someone who hosts every year

Skip "Happy Thanksgiving." Engrave something that is still true in March, so the mug comes out of the cupboard all year and not just in October.

  • Their name, in a plain serif. Simple, and it is always right.
  • The family name and the year they started hosting. "The Mackenzie table, since 2004." It says you noticed how long they've been doing this.
  • A line only your family understands. The dish that burned in 2019. The chair nobody sits in. Keep it under 30 characters so it reads at a glance.

Engraving on our mugs is cut through the powder coat into the steel, so it won't peel or wash off. It is included free on every order.

The two we'd bring

We engrave these to order in our Calgary workshop. Both are 18/8 stainless steel with double-wall vacuum insulation.

  • Hudson 12 oz, $36. A camp mug with a handle and no lid. It holds coffee hot for six hours, which matters to a host who pours a cup at 7 a.m. and doesn't sit down until noon. 584 reviews, averaging 4.92 stars.
  • Peyto 12 oz, $27. A compact tumbler with a sliding lid. Buy two, one engraved for each host. A couple who host together get a pair that matches, for $54.

Shipping is free on orders over $75. If three siblings split a set, that's easy to reach.

When to order for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12. Most families eat on the Saturday or Sunday before, so the gift needs to be in your hands by Friday, October 9. Our engraving takes 1–3 business days in Calgary. Then it travels by Canada Post or UPS.

If you order by Engraved by What's left for shipping before Fri Oct 9
Wednesday, September 30 Monday, October 5 at the latest Four business days. Comfortable almost anywhere in Canada
Friday, October 2 Wednesday, October 7 at the latest Two business days. You're relying on transit going well
After October 2 — Give it late, on purpose (below)

If you've missed it, give it late. Bring the wine on the night. Tell the host something is coming. When the mug arrives the following week, it lands on a quiet Tuesday instead of a crowded counter, and they thank you twice. Canada Post doesn't deliver on the holiday Monday, so don't aim for that.

Frequently asked questions

What is an appropriate hostess gift for Thanksgiving?

Something that needs nothing from the host on the day. For a host you don't know well, that's wine, cider, maple treats, chocolate or coffee. For someone who hosts every year, a gift they'll keep and use is better, such as a mug or tumbler engraved with their name.

Do you bring a gift to Thanksgiving dinner in Canada?

Yes. It's customary for guests to bring a small host gift, even to family. It doesn't need to be expensive. Canadian Living's host-gift roundup caps its list at $50, which is about right.

What should I bring when the host says not to bring anything?

Don't bring food, because that's what they meant. Bring something small for later, like a bottle of wine, coffee for the next morning or a boxed gift with a note to open it after the guests leave. Then help with the dishes.

What is a uniquely Canadian hostess gift?

Maple products, Canadian ice wine or cider, and anything made or finished by a Canadian maker. An engraved mug from a Calgary workshop fits that list, and the host keeps it long after the maple syrup is gone.

Should I bring flowers to Thanksgiving dinner?

Only if they're already in a vase. Loose flowers make the host stop cooking to find a container and trim stems. Sending them the day after, as a thank-you, works better.

When is Canadian Thanksgiving in 2026?

Monday, October 12, 2026. Most families hold the dinner on the Saturday or Sunday of the long weekend, so order anything personalized at least two weeks ahead.
