The PSW who gets your dad up at seven has three more houses before lunch. You want to thank them properly this Christmas. The catch is that the gift might not be theirs to keep, and nobody on the gift lists mentions it.

The short answer. Give a PSW something small, useful and never cash. Employer rules decide what they can accept: one Ontario hospital caps gifts under $50, Alberta Health Services at $100, and one home support agency allows none. A $30 tumbler engraved with their first name clears every limit and gets used on shift.

Can a PSW accept a Christmas gift?

Usually yes, if it's small and it isn't money. But the rule belongs to their employer, not to them. A PSW who turns down your gift isn't being rude. They're keeping their job.

Here are three real rules, read on October 27, 2026. They come from a hospital, a provincial health authority and a private home care agency, which is roughly where PSWs work.

Employer Gift limit Cash? The catch
The Ottawa Hospital (Ontario) "Less than fifty ($50.00) Canadian dollars" Never. "No Staff shall accept money of any denomination" The gift is reported to a supervisor before the end of the shift, and "should be shared with the Staff's colleagues" where possible
Alberta Health Services $100 per gift, $200 a year from one patient and their family together No cash, cheque or e-transfer Gift cards are allowed but count toward the same limits
Provincial Health & Home Care (St. John's, NL) None No "No gifts (items or cash) to be accepted from the client"

Two things follow. First, the AHS bylaw covers AHS staff. If your PSW works for a private agency, the agency's rule applies instead. Second, the spread runs from $100 to nothing. So before you buy, ask the agency office one question: "Can our PSW accept a small gift from us?" It takes a two-minute phone call.

If a hospital or agency social worker is on the same care team, their rules come from a different place again. We read the social work codes in what social workers can accept at Christmas.

Our pick: under $50, their first name, no cash

The safe zone is anything under $50 that isn't money or close to it. Inside that, pick the thing that gets used on shift.

A home care shift is a string of short visits with a drive between each one. That's why we'd give the Grouse 12 oz. It's $30, holds 355 ml, keeps coffee hot for 6 hours and cold drinks for 12, and the leakproof flip lid opens with one hand. It sits in a cup holder. Text engraving is included, so their first name goes on it at no charge.

The name is the point. A gift that says "Thank you, Maria" can't be passed along to the next shift or end up in the staff room lost-and-found. It stays theirs.

The usual PSW gifts, compared

Gift Inside the three rules above? Still around in February? Our verdict
Cash or e-transfer No, under all three No Don't. It puts them in an awkward spot
Gift card At AHS within the limit; check anywhere else Spent and forgotten Fine if the agency allows it. It reads as a tip
Chocolates or baking Yes, if the agency allows gifts at all No Best when you're thanking the whole team, since it's easy to share
"PSW life" slogan mug Yes In a cupboard About the job, not the person
Engraved tumbler with their first name Yes, at $30 In the cup holder Our pick for one PSW you see every week

If the agency says no individual gifts, don't sneak one through. Write a letter to the agency that names the worker and says what they did. The Ottawa Hospital policy points patients to exactly that: "Staff may suggest that the Patient write letters or notes of appreciation." A named letter reaches their manager, which a tumbler never will.

If two or three PSWs share the visits

Thank them together. Three Grouse 12 oz, each with a first name, come to $21 apiece because three pieces are 30% off at checkout, and orders of three or more ship in a gift box. Each one stays well under the $50 line. Nobody on the rotation gets left out, which matters more to the team than the gift does.

Personalized orders for Christmas delivery need to be in by Friday, December 11. We email a proof within 24 hours and engrave in 1 to 3 business days in our Calgary workshop.

Buying for your own PSW staff? The CRA rules are different

If you run a home care agency or manage a long-term care floor, you're the employer, and the question changes from "can they accept it" to "is it taxable." The CRA lets you give each employee non-cash gifts worth up to $500 a year, "including taxes," without it counting as income. Cash and near-cash gifts don't get that break: "The benefit is taxable." A gift card usually lands on the taxable side.

So a named tumbler beats a $25 card for staff. At 10 or more pieces in any mix of tumblers, bottles and mugs, our checkout price is 45% off, which brings a Grouse 12 oz to $16.50. Add your agency's logo for $3 and each one is $19.50, with the employee's first name included free. Twenty PSWs comes to $390 before tax, and shipping is free over $65.

One team buyer put it simply in an Etsy review on October 17, 2026: "I purchased a tumbler with our work team's logo/mascot for an upcoming gift exchange. Great quality!"

Bulk runs with a logo need artwork, a proof and 5 to 10 business days on the laser in December, so our corporate cutoff is Friday, November 20.

Thanking a whole care team?

No minimum. 45% off at 10 or more, a logo is $3 a piece, and every first name is engraved free. Send us the headcount and your date, and we'll reply within 24 hours.

Where an engraved tumbler is the wrong gift

  • The agency bans gifts outright. Then the letter is the gift. Don't put the worker in a position to refuse you.
  • You want it there tomorrow. Every name is engraved to order. After December 11, buy something local.
  • They'll put it in the dishwasher. Our product pages recommend hand-washing to keep the finish looking new. If that won't happen, pick something else.
  • You want to spend $80 on one person. That clears the AHS limit but not Ottawa's. Spend less and add a card that says why.

Frequently asked questions

Can PSWs accept gifts from clients in Canada?

Often, within limits set by their employer. The Ottawa Hospital allows unsolicited gifts under $50 and never money. Alberta Health Services allows up to $100 per gift and $200 a year from one patient and family, with no cash or e-transfers. Some home care agencies, like one in St. John's, allow no gifts at all. Ask the agency office.

What do you give a caregiver for Christmas?

Something small they'll use at work, with their name on it, and a card that says what they did for your family. An engraved tumbler or bottle under $50 fits most employer rules. If they share the visits with others, thank the whole team rather than one person.

How much should I spend on a Christmas gift for my PSW?

Stay under $50. That's the lowest cap among the rules we read, from The Ottawa Hospital, and it keeps the gift easy to accept almost anywhere. A $25 to $35 gift is plenty. What makes it land is the name and the note, not the price.

Can I give my PSW cash or a gift card?

Not cash. All three employer rules we read refuse money, and AHS names cheques and e-transfers too. AHS allows gift cards within its $100 limit, but other employers may treat a card as money. If you want to give a card, ask the agency first.

Are Christmas gifts to employees taxable in Canada?

Non-cash gifts are tax-free up to $500 per employee per year, including taxes, under CRA policy. Cash and near-cash gifts, which usually include gift cards, are a taxable benefit. So a named item usually beats a card for staff.

What can I get my PSW staff for Christmas as an employer?

Something each person keeps and uses on shift, with their name on it. At 10 or more, our Grouse 12 oz tumbler is $16.50, or $19.50 with your logo, and first names are engraved free. Order by Friday, November 20 for a December handout.

Can I thank my PSW if their agency doesn't allow gifts?

Yes. Write to the agency and name the worker. Say what they did and why it mattered to your family. The letter goes to their manager, so the worker gets credit where it counts, which no gift can do.
