The $50 budget cap is the wrong thing to optimize. The real test is month two: is the gift still on their desk, or in a drawer? One engraved item with the employee's own name beats a $50 basket of trinkets every time. Under CRA rules, anything non-cash up to $500 a year is tax-free to them anyway.
The month-two test
Think about the last branded item a company handed you. You probably can't — it's in a drawer. The gifts that escape the drawer share one trait: the person's own name on them, not just a logo. Your budget question isn't "what can I get for under $50" — it's "what will still be in use when the thank-you wears off."

Every price includes the engraving. A name, a hire date, an inside joke from the team channel — the personalization is the gift; the steel is just what carries it.
Why one $35 item beats a $50 basket
A basket splits your budget across five things nobody chose. The plant dies, the chocolate goes first week, the branded notebook joins the other branded notebooks. One well-made item with their name on it does the opposite job: it says someone thought about you, specifically. That's the entire message appreciation is supposed to send.
The tax angle most gift guides skip
The CRA lets you give non-cash gifts totalling up to $500 per employee per year with no taxable benefit; a $35 or $50 engraved piece doesn't even get close. The rules around gift cards changed in 2022 and have real conditions attached. Our CRA gift rules guide covers the details with sources.
