"The puck does say what it's suppose to say but you can't see the writing on the puck unless you hold it just so." That's a 1-star Etsy review of one of our engraved pucks, from February 2026. It's the most useful thing anyone can tell you before you order thirty of them for a banquet.
Laser engraving on a black puck is permanent, and it's quiet. Here's what that means for your design, what custom pucks really cost in Canada (ours and five other sellers'), and when to print instead.
The short answer. In Canada, a custom hockey puck costs about $10 to $25 for one and less at team quantities. Ours are $17.99 for one and $10.83 each at 12 or more, engraving included. Engrave a keepsake you'll hold in your hand. Print a logo that has to read from across the room.

What engraving on a black puck actually looks like
A laser removes a thin layer of rubber. The design shows up as a tonal, black-on-black relief: a change in texture and sheen, not a colour. Our product page says it plainly now: "the design appears as a tonal black-on-black relief on the finished puck, never painted colour."
In the hand, under a light, it looks sharp. On a banquet table from six feet away, it can disappear. Six of the Etsy reviews on our pucks are 1 or 2 stars, and four of them say the same thing:
- "Can barely see the print. In the pictures, it's clear, but not in person." (June 2025)
- "It was very hard to see the engraving on the puck." (May 2025)
- "I thought his name and number would stand out more on the puck." (September 2026)
The other two were about a design printed off centre and pucks scuffed in shipping. We'd rather you read these here than find out at the banquet.
Other shops describe the same method differently. Sona Arts in Toronto lists its laser option as "Black color with engraved depth." Memories Made in Ontario calls its engraving "high-contrast." Ask any seller for a photo of a real engraved puck taken at an angle, not a digital preview.

Where we fit: we're not the cheapest single puck. Sona Arts and J.A.B. are, at $10. At 12 or more we're $10.83 each, with a different name on every puck, which is the size of a team order. Where we don't fit: a single colour puck (our full-colour pucks start at 12; Sona Arts and J.A.B. will print one), or a printed run of hundreds for a league (Inglasco).

How to design a puck people can read
The reviews above taught us more than any spec sheet. With tonal engraving, less text reads better.
- Front: two lines at most. A name and a number, or a name and "First Goal." Big letters fill the 3-inch face.
- Bold, plain fonts. Thin script fonts can lose their fine strokes on rubber.
- Put the details on the back. Date, score, team and season go on the second side, where small text is fine because it's read up close.
- Simple logos. A one-colour crest engraves well. Gradients and photos don't. They need a printer.
- Check the proof for placement. Our proof arrives within 24 hours. Look at where the design sits on the face, not only the spelling.
For a team, put each player's name and number in the order notes, in roster order. One buyer wrote: "I ordered 2 of these for my goalies who both got a shutout in the championship game for our league. They were stoked."
What a regulation puck is
The NHL rulebook (2026-27, Rule 13.1) says the puck "shall be made of vulcanized rubber, or other approved material, one inch (1'') thick and three inches (3'') in diameter and shall weigh between five and one-half ounces (51/2'' oz.) and six ounces (6 oz.)." Hockey Canada's Rule 3.8 gives the same size in metric, 156 to 170 grams, and adds that the puck "will be black in colour." Under-9 hockey can use a lighter 4-ounce puck.

When to order
Most minor hockey seasons wrap up in March and April, which makes that banquet season. Give yourself two weeks before the banquet: a day for the proof, 1 to 3 business days to make, then shipping.

How do I put a logo on a hockey puck?
Send the seller a clean logo file. For laser engraving, a one-colour logo works best and shows as a tonal mark. For a full-colour logo, choose a UV or pad printer. Always approve a proof before anything is made.
Is engraving or printing better on a hockey puck?
Engraving is better for a puck someone will keep: a name, a number, a date, a milestone. It's part of the rubber, so there's nothing to rub off, but it shows as a quiet black-on-black mark. Printing is better when colour is the point, like a team crest or a sponsor logo that has to read from across a room.
Does the NHL still freeze pucks?
Yes. NHL Rule 13.2 says game pucks "shall be kept in a frozen condition" at the penalty bench. NHL.com reports they're kept at 14 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce bouncing, and a typical game uses 15 to 20 pucks.
What should I engrave on a hockey puck?
The player's name and number on the front, and the date, team and season on the back. For a milestone, add the moment: "First Goal," "Shutout," or "Coach" with the years.
