You found the photo. Two kids on a dock in August, or the dog the year before his muzzle went grey. Then the order page asks a question nobody warned you about: engraved, or printed? Pick wrong and the gift either fades in the dishwasher or comes out as a grey smudge nobody can read.

The short answer. Engrave it, on a dark tumbler. A laser-engraved photo is cut into the steel, so it can't peel, but it comes out in one tone. Choose a full-colour print only when the colour is the point, and hand-wash it. Most Canadian photo chains engrave names and print photos, not both.

What page one sells you

I searched "photo engraved tumbler" and "custom photo travel mug canada" in October 2026 and opened every Canadian shop on the first page. Fujifilm PrintLife, Vistaprint, Staples Copy & Print, Shoppers Photo, Walmart Photo Centre, Shutterfly Canada and Photo Prints Plus all came up.

None of their product pages offers a photo engraved into a steel tumbler. The engraved tumblers they sell are for names, text and clip art. Vistaprint says it plainly on its 20 oz tumbler page: "we recommend using text or graphic-based designs, not photos." Staples Copy & Print lists its tumbler as "text and clipart library" only.

Their photo products are a separate line, printed. Shoppers Photo's photo travel mug is a 14 oz aluminum mug, and the page says it isn't dishwasher safe. That's a fine gift for $38. It just isn't the same object as a photo cut into steel.

Engraved or printed: the honest trade

An engraved photo is a laser burning the photo's light and dark into the cup. On a powder-coated tumbler the laser cuts through the coating to bare steel. The steel shows through in one tone, silver on whatever colour the cup is. It can't peel, because there is nothing sitting on top to peel. Our product pages call the mark dishwasher-safe for that reason.

A printed photo keeps its colour. The ink sits on the surface, and that's both its strength and its limit. It's glossy, it can come out lighter than the screen, and it can wear. We know because our own customers told us. One wrote in May 2025: "I wish I realized the UV is more glossy than matte. If I was to choose again, I would choose to engrave the picture." In September 2026 another left us one star because a printed picture "started peeling" a week after the gift was opened.

So here is how we rank them for a photo gift someone will keep:

  1. Engraved, on a dark cup. Highest contrast, nothing to wear off. Best for faces, pets and wedding photos.
  2. Full-colour print, hand-washed. Pick this when the colour is the memory: a sunset, a team jersey, a kid's drawing.
  3. A printed photo mug from a photo chain. Cheapest and fastest to order online. Expect a desk mug, not a travel cup that goes through the dishwasher for years.

Where we don't fit

If you want a full-colour photo on a mug for under $25, Walmart Photo Centre and Staples will get you there for less than we can. If you need it this week, a local engraver with a counter will beat any online order. And if the photo is a sunset where the orange is the whole point, an engraving will disappoint you: it shows light and dark, never colour.

Engraving can also come out quieter than people expect. A customer told us in October 2026 that "the picture engraving is a bit more subtle than expected." That's honest. The steel shows the photo in silver, and silver reads softly next to a bright print.

Pick the photo before you pick the cup

Most bad photo gifts are decided at the photo, not the laser. Here's what works:

  • One or two faces, filling the frame. The engraving area on a 16 oz tumbler is a few inches tall. A group of eight people becomes eight dots. A customer in 2025 "opted to not do a family pic because it looked weird" once they saw the proof, and they were right to.
  • Plain background. Crop out the trees, the crowd and the kitchen. Busy backgrounds turn to texture.
  • Even light, no backlight. A face lit from behind turns into a silhouette. One of our one-star reviews from May 2026 says the picture was "so dark you cannot even see it. Also very small." Start bright and crop tight.
  • The original file, not a screenshot. Send the photo from your camera roll, not a picture of a picture.
  • Pets with long fur: think line drawing. One buyer found a regular photo looked "busy with all of the hair" and sent a simplified version instead. It came out sharp.

Then pick a dark cup. The engraving is silver, so it needs a dark coat behind it. A customer who has ordered several put it best: "The darker colors are best as the picture shows up so well. I got the red one and the picture wasn't as strong because there wasn't as much contrast." Onyx is the safe choice.

The proof is your only rehearsal

We email a proof of every custom design within 24 hours, and we engrave in Calgary only after you approve it. Use that step. Look at the proof on your phone at arm's length, the way someone will see the cup on a desk. If you can't tell who's in it from there, ask for a tighter crop or a different photo. It costs nothing to change a proof. It costs a gift to change a cup.

For Christmas, order personalized gifts by Friday, December 11. That date leaves room for the proof, 1–3 business days of engraving, and December mail.

Common questions

Can you engrave a photo on a stainless steel tumbler? Yes, with a laser on a powder-coated tumbler. The laser removes the coating in the photo's light areas, so the image shows in the steel's own tone. Many Canadian photo shops only engrave text and clip art on tumblers and print photos instead.

Which lasts longer, an engraved photo or a printed one? The engraved one. It's cut into the cup, so there's no layer to peel or fade. A printed photo keeps full colour but sits on the surface, so hand-wash it and expect some wear over the years.

Is a photo-engraved tumbler dishwasher safe? The engraving itself is: there's nothing on top to come off. We still recommend hand-washing the cup to keep the coat around it looking new. Several photo-chain tumblers and mugs say hand wash only on their own pages.

What kind of photo works best for engraving? One or two faces filling the frame, a plain background and even light. Group shots, backlit photos and busy backgrounds lose detail at tumbler size.

What colour tumbler is best for a photo engraving? A dark one. The engraved photo shows as bare silver steel, so it stands out most on black or another dark coat. Light colours give less contrast.

How much does a photo engraved tumbler cost in Canada? At LAMOSE, $50 for a Peyto 16 oz with an engraved photo, or $68 with a full-colour print, as of October 2026. Printed photo travel mugs at Canadian photo chains run about $33 to $38.

How long does it take? We send a proof within 24 hours and engrave 1–3 business days after you approve it, then ship. Staples Copy & Print lists 7 to 10 business days and Walmart Photo Centre 6 to 10.
