You saw the video: someone rubs a lead-test swab across the bottom of a tumbler, it turns pink, and suddenly the cup on your desk feels like a threat. Here is the part that clip left out — the lead it found is sealed inside the base, behind a layer of steel, and never touches your drink.

Yes — stainless steel is safe to drink from. Food-grade stainless — grade 304, stamped 18/8, also labeled SUS304 under the Japanese/Chinese industrial standard — is non-toxic, BPA-free, and doesn't leach into what you pour in. The chromium in the alloy forms a passive layer that resists acid and rust. The real question was never the steel. It's whether the maker used a real food-grade alloy or cut the corner.

That last sentence is the whole article. Everything below is how to tell the two apart — and what to make of the lead videos before you toss a good cup.

Is the lead panic real?

Partly, and the honest answer is the reason this page exists.

Some sealed, vacuum-insulated tumblers use a small dab of lead-based solder to close the vacuum plug on the outside bottom of the cup, under a welded steel cap. Press a home lead swab to that exact spot and it can read positive. That is what the viral videos show.

Here is what they skip. That plug sits on the exterior base, behind a layer of steel, and never contacts your coffee or your water. The surface you actually drink from, the inner wall your lips and liquid meet, is bare food-grade stainless with no lead in it. Reputable makers that build cups this way publish third-party testing showing zero lead on any food-contact surface. If a maker won't show you that testing, that silence is your answer, not the swab.

The one number that matters: steel grade

The fastest way to judge a cup is the short code stamped on the base. Two grades are safe for anything you'd drink:

  • 304, stamped 18/8 — 18% chromium, 8% nickel, the rest iron. The chromium builds an invisible oxide layer that keeps the steel from reacting with your coffee, your citrus water, or your kombucha. It's the food-safe standard for restaurant kitchens, dairy lines, and quality tumblers. 18/8 and 304 are the same steel — two names for one alloy. Every LAMOSE cup starts here.
  • 316 — the same base alloy with 2–3% molybdenum added. The molybdenum pushes corrosion resistance a step further, so it shrugs off salt and acid that slowly work on lesser steel. It's a genuine upgrade over 18/8, not a badge. LAMOSE builds the Emerald 16 oz and 12 oz in 316; the rest of the line is 304.

What to walk away from: 200-series steel, which swaps cheaper manganese in for nickel, corrodes faster, and can pick up a tinny taste — and ungraded steel with no markings at all. If a listing just says "stainless steel" with no 304, 18/8, or 316 anywhere, treat that silence as the answer.

Does stainless steel contain BPA?

No — and this is the line plastic can't match. BPA lives in polycarbonate plastics and the epoxy linings inside aluminum bottles and cans. Food-grade stainless has no plastic on the drinking surface, so there is nothing to leach: no lining, no epoxy, no BPA. Hot coffee stays coffee.

The one place plastic shows up is the lid — some use a plastic slider or gasket. On a LAMOSE lid, those parts are BPA-free, food-safe materials, held to the same standard as the cup itself.

What about nickel and chromium leaching?

Real question, small answer. Food-grade 304 releases trace metals so far below health-authority intake limits that even acidic drinks don't move the needle for the vast majority of people. The nickel stays locked in the alloy's structure; it doesn't rinse out into your water.

If you have a severe nickel allergy, it's worth a word with your doctor before you commit to a daily cup. For everyday use, food-grade steel is safe for effectively everyone.

Is it safe for hot, cold, and acidic drinks?

Yes to all three — with one honest note on acid.

  • Hot drinks. Completely safe. On a double-wall cup only the inner steel wall meets your coffee, and steel doesn't shed anything when heated the way plastic does. The outer wall stays cool enough to hold.
  • Cold drinks. Ideal. Vacuum insulation holds iced tea or water cold for hours with no puddle of sweat on your desk.
  • Acidic drinks. Fine for normal use — orange juice, kombucha, lemon water are no problem. The only caveat is storing undiluted acid, like straight lemon juice or vinegar, for a full day or more in any steel container. Drink it through the day and you'll never notice.
  • Carbonated drinks. Steel handles fizz well. In a sealed bottle, crack the lid now and then to let pressure off.

On the lines that matter for something you drink from every day:

The verdict: steel wins on safety, durability, and insulation. Glass is a close second on pure chemistry, inert and easy to see into, but it breaks and it won't hold temperature. Plastic and aluminum trail on nearly every line. If you want one cup to keep for a decade, it's steel.

The honest downsides

No material wins on everything, and pretending otherwise is how you end up not trusting the review. So, straight. None of these is a safety issue:

  • It costs more up front than a plastic cup. It earns that back by lasting ten years instead of one.
  • You can't see inside. Some people want to watch the water level or the cold brew steep. Steel is opaque.
  • The finish can scratch or dent if you drop it on concrete. The steel is fine; the powder coat under a logo can mark.
  • It's not microwave-safe, and a vacuum cup shouldn't go in the freezer — expansion can stress the seal that does the insulating.

They're trade-offs, and for most people the ten-year life settles it.

How to check the cup you already own

Five quick tests, no lab required:

  1. Read the grade. Look for 304, 18/8, or 316. No grade listed anywhere is the warning sign.
  2. Feel the weight. A double-wall vacuum cup is noticeably heavier than a single-wall one — that heft is the two walls and the vacuum between them.
  3. Do the smell test. Fill it with warm water, wait an hour. Good steel gives you nothing: no metallic smell, no taste. An odour points to a lower grade.
  4. Look for the maker's testing. A real maker references food-contact standards or third-party lead testing and will show you on request.
  5. Check the seams. A smooth, polished interior with no rough welds. Rough seams harbour bacteria.

If your cup passes those, keep it. If it fails the grade check, replace it — and this time buy from someone who'll tell you what's in the steel.

How to care for it so it lasts

  • Wash after use with warm, soapy water. Many LAMOSE cups are top-rack dishwasher safe, but hand-washing protects the powder coat and any engraving longer.
  • Deep clean weekly with a tablespoon of baking soda in warm water — sit 15 minutes, scrub gently.
  • Skip bleach and chlorine. They attack the chromium layer that keeps steel corrosion-free.
  • Store with the lid off so moisture doesn't sit inside.

FAQ

Is the lead in tumblers actually dangerous?
Not from the sealed vacuum base of a properly made cup. That lead sits behind steel on the exterior bottom and never touches your drink — the food-contact surface is bare food-grade steel. Ask the maker for their lead testing; a real one will show you.

Is 18/8 stainless steel safe to drink from?
Yes. 18/8 is the same steel as grade 304 — the food-safe standard used in restaurant kitchens and quality tumblers worldwide. It's the baseline you want, and it's what every LAMOSE cup starts from.

Are stainless steel cups safe for hot drinks?
Yes. Steel doesn't release chemicals when heated, and on a double-wall cup only the inner steel wall meets your coffee. Your morning drink is as safe hot as it is cold.

Does stainless steel change the taste of water?
Food-grade 304 doesn't. If you taste metallic notes, the cup is likely a lower grade. Every LAMOSE cup is taste-neutral.

Is 316 steel better than 304 for a cup?

With basic care, 10+ years. The steel is nearly indestructible — usually the lid gasket wears out first, and that's a cheap swap.
