You have two tabs open. Same size bottle, same colour, same lid style. One says 18/8 stainless steel. The other says 316 surgical-grade and costs almost twice as much. Nothing on either page explains why — so you close both tabs and buy neither.

The short answer: 18/8 stainless steel — also called 304 — is what almost every water bottle on the market is made from, and it is genuinely food-safe. 316 adds molybdenum for extra corrosion resistance, which matters in salt water and lab equipment. For a bottle that holds water, coffee, or juice, it does not change how safe or how good the steel is. "Surgical grade" on a water bottle is a marketing term, not a meaningful upgrade.

18/8, 304, 316 — same family, one real difference

The numbers refer to the chromium and nickel content. 18/8 means 18% chromium, 8% nickel — the same alloy the food industry calls 304. It is what your kitchen sink, your cutlery, and most water bottles are made from. It resists rust, does not leach into what you drink, and does not hold onto smell or taste.

316 adds 2-3% molybdenum. That one addition raises resistance to chloride — salt, specifically. It is why 316 shows up in boat fittings, surgical tools, and coastal hardware, where salt exposure eats lesser steel over years. The molybdenum does nothing for the water sitting inside a sealed bottle.

Here's the opinion: buy 316 for the name, not the steel

We sell both grades, so we have no reason to talk you into the cheaper one. Here's the position anyway: for a bottle you fill with water, coffee, or juice, 18/8 is not a compromise. It is the correct steel for the job, the same alloy your stainless cookware is made from, and it will not wear out, rust, or start tasting like anything.

316 earns its keep on a boat deck or a surgical tray, where salt or sterilization chemicals attack ordinary steel over time. A bottle that lives in a backpack or a cupholder never sees that kind of exposure. Paying double for 316 on a bottle is paying for a spec sheet, not a better drink.

The one place we'd actually recommend 316: if the bottle is genuinely going to sea — sailing, kayaking in salt water, dockside work. Otherwise, keep your money.

Frequently asked questions

Is 18/8 stainless steel safe to drink from?
Yes. 18/8 is the same alloy sold as 304, the standard for food-contact steel worldwide. It does not leach chemicals, does not carry BPA (there's no plastic in it to carry BPA), and does not react with water, coffee, or juice.

Is 316 stainless steel better than 18/8 for a water bottle?
Not for holding a drink. 316 adds resistance to salt corrosion, which matters on a boat or in a lab, not in a cupholder. Both grades are equally food-safe.

What does "surgical grade" or "medical grade" mean on a water bottle?
It usually means 316. Surgical instruments are often made from 316 because it survives repeated sterilization and salt-adjacent chemical exposure — a real property, just not one a water bottle needs. Treat "surgical grade" on a bottle as a marketing label, not a safety claim.

Is 18/8 the same thing as 304 stainless steel?
Yes. 18/8 describes the composition (18% chromium, 8% nickel); 304 is the industry grade name for that same alloy. Different label, same steel.

Does the steel grade change how a bottle tastes or smells?
No — both 18/8 and 316 are non-porous, so neither absorbs odour or flavour the way plastic does. If a steel bottle smells, the cause is almost always the plastic lid or gasket, not the steel grade.
